Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Manchester United look set for a busy end to the window with Romelu Lukaku and perhaps Paul Pogba still heading for the exit.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appears happy to ditch the Belgian and Juventus may have edged ahead of Inter Milan in the race to sign him.

Paulo Dybala in return, as well as Inter’s stubborness to raise their offer closer to United’s asking price, could send Lukaku to Turin in a sensational swap move.

Meanwhile, Gareth Bale’s move to China has collapsed and he is too “traumatised” to travel to Germany for the Audi Cup.

Though Josh Toshack has criticised the Welsh forward for his behaviour since moving to Spain.

“Come out Gareth, do an interview, speak yourself,” the 70-year-old told BBC Radio 5 Live. “You’ve been here six or seven years now. You don’t speak the language. That’s an insult to the people that you’re working for.

“It’s not gone down well at all here in Spain, and it saddens me.

“He’s been important in Real Madrid. It’s just a great pity that he hasn’t engaged himself a little bit more with the country that he’s living in, with the supporters that are there every week.

“Gareth, come on. Take a little bit of time out and learn the language.”

Former Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is in talks to join Rangers.

The Slovakian could join up with former teammate Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, report Fotomac.

After leaving Fenerbahce following the expiration of his contract, Skrtel has options to move to Glasgow, while Parma and Olympiacos are also keen.

Liverpool could be forced to pay up to £10m for Harvey Elliott.

The ex-Fulham youngster joined the Reds on Sunday with his contract at Craven Cottage expiring.

But Fulham are still due a development fee, to be determined by the Professional Football Compensation Committee.

And the Evening Standard claim it is likely to hit £10m, beating the current biggest total of £8m the Reds were forced to pay Burnley for Danny Ings.

Jose Mourinho is underlined his desire to return to management when the right opportunity arises.

The Portuguese has been out of work since December last year following his sacking at Manchester United, but he remains “full of fire” in anticipation of his return.

Despite the lure of international football, Mourinho is eager to get back into the club game, specifically the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga Serie A or Ligue 1.

“I have some time to think, to rethink, to analyse and what I feel is exactly that ‘Ze’ (Mourinho’s nickname as a boy) is full of fire,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

“My friends tell me ‘enjoy your time, enjoy your July, enjoy your August, enjoy what you never had’. Honestly, I can’t enjoy. I am not happy enough to enjoy. I miss my football, I have the fire.
