Transfer news LIVE: Newcastle sign Isak, Man Utd chase keeper, Arsenal and Chelsea latest
Arsenal, Manchester United and Chelsea are among those chasing deals with just days left of the summer transfer window
Cristiano Ronaldo’s search for a new club is intensifying as the Portuguese forward seeks an exit from Manchester United. Reports suggest his agent Jorge Mendes is working around the clock to find a suitor, with Sporting CP extremely interested and preparing to announce according to caughtoffside, while Sky Sports says Napoli are in the running and looking to make space in their budget for the superstar striker.
West Ham United are preparing a new bid for 24-year-old Brazil midfielder Lucas Paqueta after Lyon rejected an offer worth around £50m. Chelsea are weighing up their next – and possibly final – bid for Leicester’s wantaway defender Wesley Fofana, while Manchester United are doing likewise as they consider upping their offer for Ajax winger Antony. Football Insider claims United are also ready to offer for PSV’s Cody Gakpo despite the Athletic’s claim that interest in the winger had cooled.
Arsenal have been linked with Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans and Wolves forward Pedro Neto, with Nicolas Pepe set to depart on loan to Nice. Chelsea meanwhile are set to let winger Callum Hudson-Odoi join Bayer Leverkusen on loan, as talks continue with Barcelona’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continue. Follow all the latest news, rumours and done deals below.
Howe reluctant to lose Dubravka
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe says he is reluctant to lose goalkeeper Martin Dubravka before the end of the transfer window amid rumours that Manchester United want to sign him.
Howe confirmed that United are in talks with Newcastle over their deputy goalkeeper as they look to provide more competition for David de Gea.
But Howe admits any deal is “out of my hands”.
“I don’t think he’s in talks with Manchester United,” said Howe. “There has been contact between the clubs and those discussions will continue.
“In terms of a final outcome, I’m reluctant to lose any important players from the group.”
Gerrard? Lampard? Moyes? Decisive days ahead will decide Premier League sack race
Even before this season began, the Aston Villa players had noticed something different about preparation. The management staff have a private instagram account that the squad all follow, and it used to be filled with tactical ideas and clips from training. That was at least until this summer, and the departure of Michael Beale.
Since then, the posts have been a lot less frequent. A connected criticism has been that Villa’s tactical set-up is a lot less sophisticated. It may be unfair, perhaps even premature, but it does speak to the idea that it was Beale who did the team shape and Steven Gerrard who did everything around it.
Villa have consequently been easier to get at. The players are still adapting to a new approach.
At West Ham United, who go to Aston Villa this weekend, it’s been the opposite. The players know all of the tactics far too well, to the point it’s all gone stale. David Moyes’ defensive system has never been that enjoyable for the squad, but they were obviously fully invested in it when everything was going well. Now, there’s a growing sense they need something fresh.

Aurier agrees Forest move
Ex-Tottenham Hotpsur right-back Serge Aurier has reportedly agreed to join Nottingham Forest and could become the club’s 17th signing this summer.
Foot Mercato say the 29-year-old Ivorian has accepted a two-year contract offer having been released by Villarreal in June.
Former Everton loanee Djibril Sidibe, another free agent, was identified as an alternative and personal terms were also agreed, meaning Forest could yet sign both players.
Gueye wants to return to Everton
PSG’s Idrissa Gueye is hopeful of returning to Goodison Park but the Toffees face competition from Sporting Lisbon and Porto in their bid to re-sign the midfielder.
According to Le10 Sport, the 32-year-old Sengeal international is free to leave Paris Saint-Germain this summer and PSG chief Antero Henrique is prepared to let him join either Portuguese club for free though it seems there is an attempt to get Everton to stump up a fee for their former player.
Ralph Hasenhuttl expects Manchester United to be challenging for silverware
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl expects weekend opponents Manchester United to be eyeing silverware this season, despite an unconvincing start to Erik ten Hag’s reign.
A new era at Old Trafford began with defeat to Brighton and a thrashing at Brentford before United silenced some of their critics by beating bitter rivals Liverpool on Monday evening.
The 20-time English champions, who came into the 2022-23 season on the back of their worst Premier League campaign from a points perspective, have been further boosted by the big-money arrival of midfielder Casemiro from Real Madrid.

Southampton ‘definitely’ not selling Adams
Southampton boss, Ralph Hasenhuttl, has shut down rumours that forward Che Adams could be making a move to Everton.
The Toffees are interested in the 26-year-old Scotland international but Hasenhuttl addressed the move in his press conference saying:
“He’s our player and we definitely won’t sell him.”
Everton have since moved on to chasing Brighton’s Neal Maupay who is set to complete a medical at the club today.
McTominay staying at Old Trafford
Manchester United have no intention of seeing Scott McTominay leave this summer despite The Daily Mail reporting that Newcastle were interested in taking the midfielder as part of a deal that would see Martin Dubravka move to the Red Devils.
Old Trafford insiders revealed that the club are determined to keep the Scotland international.
The 25-year-old made 37 appearances in all competitions last season but his first team place is now under threat by the arrival of new signing Casemiro.
Isak’s Newcastle deal
talkSPORT reports that Alexander Isak has signed a six-year deal with Newcastle after completing his medical ahead of a club-record £60m move from Real Sociedad.
Newcastle were hopeful of registering Isak by midday so he is available for Sunday’s clash with Wolves though there has not yet been an official announcement of his signing.

Juventus confirm Milik
Juventus have confirmed the signing of striker Arkadiusz Milik with the Polish international joining the Old Lady on a season-loan from Marseille.
Milik scored 20 goals for the Ligue 1 side last season and has now made the move to Turin in a bid to help solve Juve’s attacking issues.
The forward’s signing also effectively ends Juventus’ pursuit of Memphis Depay who will have to look elsewhere for a club to join.
