Like Sterling, England defender Chilwell has found himself frozen out at Chelsea, training away from the rest of the first-team squad. The 27-year-old left-back is a reported target for Manchester United, who are in need of experienced cover for Luke Shaw.

Crystal Palace defender Guehi was one of the most impressive performers for England at Euro 2024 and has returned to club action a man in demand. Newcastle have reportedly had several offers rejected – including one worth £60m plus £5m in add-ons – and it remains to be seen if Palace will hold out through to the transfer deadline.

Aaron Ramsdale

England goalkeeper Ramsdale fell out of favour at Arsenal last season, with David Raya taking over as Mikel Arteta’s regular number one. The 26-year-old has been attracting plenty of interest, with Wolves offering a season-long loan and Southampton also linked with a deal ahead of deadline day.

Ivan Toney

Brentford striker Toney continues to be linked with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Ahli ahead of the window closing. The England international was left out of the Bees’ opening game against Crystal Palace because of the “transfer interest” but as yet, no firm deal appears close.

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling has no expectation of featuring for Chelsea this season after being told by head coach Enzo Maresca that he is not in his plans after being left out of the Premier League opener against Manchester City. Sterling, 29, is said to be keen to remain in England, with Aston Villa touted as a possible destination.

American businessman John Textor is confident of completing a takeover at Everton after outlining his desire to sell his interest in Crystal Palace.

Textor has a 45 per cent stake in Palace but has been in talks with current Everton owner Farshad Moshiri about taking over the Toffees.

The 58-year-old digital media and entertainment entrepreneur has to sell his Palace shares as he can not invest in two Premier League clubs at the same time.

“When I arrived here, I knew him before because we were working in Arsenal together. I knew his mentality and even now it’s stronger than before because he’s achieving individual objectives with his national team and here with Aston Villa.

“His extension is fantastic for us and very good for every supporter of Aston Villa, we can be proud of him.”

“To achieve the objectives we are facing, dreaming is very difficult, but I want to dream and work hard to get it. At the moment we are in a good way but there’s still a lot of work to do to continue being consistent like I want.”

Joao Felix could make his second Chelsea debut against Wolves on Sunday 25 August as head coach Enzo Maresca tipped the returning forward to be a standout addition amongst a glut of new faces at Stamford Bridge.

Felix completed his return to the club on Wednesday, signing a seven-year contract – 15 months after he last played for the Blues on loan – with the Portugal forward’s arrival from Atletico Madrid helping facilitate Conor Gallagher’s move in the opposite direction.

He was unable to feature for Chelsea against Servette in the Europa Conference League playoff 24 hours later, but could be in line to face Wolves in the Premier League.

Ilkay Gundogan’s Manchester City return came out of the blue but Pep Guardiola had no doubts about bringing back their treble-winning captain when the opportunity arose.

The 33-year-old midfielder completed a stunning return to the Etihad Stadium on Friday just a year after leaving for LaLiga giants Barcelona.

Gundogan has signed a one-year deal with what he calls the “best club in the world” and Guardiola says he could make his second City debut against Ipswich on Saturday.
