'Tottenham will be mad after 6-1 defeat' - ten Hag warns United squad

Tottenham Hotspur banished all memories of their 6-1 defeat to Newcastle to complete a remarkable fightback against Manchester United on Thursday night.

Things started badly for the hosts as Jadon Sacho sent the visitors ahead inside seven minutes as Erik ten Hag’s men imposed themselves on the game. Marcus Rashford then finished off a wonderful move to send United into the break with a comfortable lead as the Tottenham players were booed off.

The second half saw a different Tottenham side come onto the pitch. From the off they controlled the tempo and, aided by key personnel like Christian Eriksen being taken off, they found a way back into the game - Pedro Porro volleying a shot home from the right side of the box.

From there Spurs continued to push and, despite a poor individual performance, Son Heung-min bobbled in an equaliser having been expertly picked out by Harry Kane inside the area. Spurs earned just one point but in the context of their recent performances it will feel like a whole lot more.

Tottenham vs Man Utd

Here come the players.

This is a big game for both team’s hopes of earning European football next season. There’s more on the line for Spurs who are hoping to clinch a Europa League space.

United can afford to lose and still remain in the top four. If Erik ten Hag’s men win tonight though they’ll all but confirm a place in the Champions League next year.

Kick off is up next...

Pre-match thoughts from Erik ten Hag

Asked if tonight’s match was a good chance to strengthen Manchester United’s position in the top four, Ten Hag said: “Yes it is when you see the table.

“But we have to think about the game. We have to show we are very hungry, play on the front foot and show that we are determined.”

Should Tottenham sell Harry Kane to fund rebuild under a new manager?

Harry Kane’s future will once more be on the agenda in the summer, with Tottenham Hotspur falling short in all their major objectives for this season and churning through managers like other clubs make subs.

There remains pressure on Daniel Levy too, while any incoming boss will doubtless - yet again - want to undertake something of a rebuild of the playing squad to suit his formation and style.

It brings the obvious question - and particularly ahead of a clash against Manchester United who have been linked with the England skipper for so long - should Kane finally be moving on from north London?

The Independent’s sports desk came together to offer viewpoints on both the club and the striker, as to whether he should stay or go, for what fee and what might ultimately happen in the off-season.

Is it in Spurs’ best interests to allow Kane to leave – and what fee would be reasonable?

Kane eyes up a hundred

Harry Kane is one shy of 100 Premier League home goals and would become the first player in the competition to reach a century of goals both home and away.
