Tottenham Hotspur host Manchester City in a barnstorming clash for the FA Cup fourth round with the north London outfit hoping to knock the current holders out of the competition.

Spurs defeated Burnley 1-0 in the previous round, thanks to a 78th minute goal from Pedro Porro, to set up the clash with Pep Guardiola’s men. Though Postecoglou will be without the services of Son Heung-Min who is off playing in the Asia Cup, Tottenham could be boosted by the returns of James Maddison, who has been missing since November with an ankle injury, and defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Another benefit for Spurs is that Guardiola still cannot call on Erling Haaland who is recovering from injury. Not that his absence is slowing down the FA Cup holders. They are on a nine-game unbeaten run with eight wins and one draw during that time. City have scored eight goals in their last two outings and have Kevin De Bruyne back fit and firing.

Kalvin Phillips joins West Ham on loan from Man City

Kalvin Phillips has joined West Ham on loan from Manchester City for the rest of the season.

The two clubs agreed a straight loan deal, and the Hammers do not have an option to buy the 28-year-old after seeing off interest from Newcastle, Crystal Palace, Barcelona and Juventus to get him.

Phillips passed a medical on Thursday and becomes David Moyes’ first January signing and the third midfielder he has recruited since the £105m sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal, after Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse.

Guardiola on Haaland’s injury

Pep Guardiola gave an update on Manchester City’s star striker Erling Haaland saying: “In the start we thought it was a bit less, but there was a little fracture on the bone.

“When you have these kind of injuries, it’s between six and eight weeks out - it’s not a lot.

“The bone needs time to close and now he’s almost at the end of eight weeks next weekend or next week. He feels good and now he needs time for the rhythm and start to get the minutes, then he will be fit.

“In Abu Dhabi and here in the last week to 10 last days, he didn’t feel anything which is a good sign.

“Coming back after two three sessions he felt a little bit of disturbance, that’s why we were cautious, but now he feels good and in three or four more days, hopefully against Burnley, he can play some minutes and after that, we will see.”

An injury update from Spurs

“Team news wise, everyone from the last game, has got through well,” Ange Postecoglou explained about his Tottenham team. “We gave them a few days off, which I think was good for them.

“And, yes, since the return ‘Madders’ is back training with the group, which is good. So he’s feeling good. Ben (Davies) and Dane Scarlett also began training with the group so it’s good to get the numbers back up.”

Postecoglou on Maddison

Tottenham will be boosted in their pursuit of reaching the FA Cup fifth round by the return of James Maddison.

The Spurs boss said of the midfielder that "there aren’t too many in the league that are like him" before adding: "It just helps our ability to prepare for the challenges ahead.

“We have been through a difficult period."

Pep Guardiola sends ominous warning to Man Utd after they pinch key Man City figure

It was the most unexpected departure of Manchester City’s January transfer window. Not Kalvin Phillips, dispatched on loan to West Ham with Pep Guardiola’s best wishes and praise for his attitude on the training ground and with the unlikely suggestion he could come back to play a part at the Etihad Stadium, though the telling admission was that City will not look to replace him. Not Phillips but Omar Berrada.

Manchester United’s new chief executive has done a reverse Denis Law or Carlos Tevez, swapping the blue half of Manchester for the red. His appointment by the new regime at Old Trafford, under Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has been widely hailed as a coup.

The sense is that City have been the best off the field, as well as on it in recent years. United could learn from their rivals, borrowing from their thinking, perhaps pilfering their plans, pinching their Chief Operating Officer.

Tottenham vs Man City team news

Spurs are still without Son Heung-Min, Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr who are away at the Africa Cup of Nations and Asian Cup respectively. Alejo Veliz, Giovani Lo Celso, Ben Davies and Manor Solomon remain long-term absentees but Postecoglou will hope to be able to call on the services of James Maddison for the first time since the Englishman injured his ankle in November.

City, meanwhile, will hope to have Erling Haaland available for selection after his spell on the sidelines with a foot injury. John Stones and Manuel Akanji could well return in central defence, while a late fitness call will also be made on Ederson after he picked up a knock in the game against Newcastle.
