Klopp: Politics mustn't come before football

Mohamed Salah cleverly fashioned one goal and was gifted another as Liverpool claimed a 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Salah opened the scoring after 11 minutes when he expertly controlled a pass from Darwin Nunez inside the area, turned and fired a low shot into the corner with his left foot. His second goal five minutes before half-time was a gift from Eric Dier who miscued a header from a kick downfield by Alisson and the Egyptian ran clear and dinked the ball past Hugo Lloris.

The hosts had their moments with Ivan Perisic hitting the woodwork in each half and they could have had a penalty when Ryan Sessegnon was bundled over by Trent Alexander-Arnold. After the break, Spurs raised their game, boosted by Dejan Kulusevski returning from injury off the bench. He had an almost instant impact as he fed Harry Kane who scored in the 70th minute

But Liverpool weathered the storm to claim the win and end a run of two Premier League defeats, leaving them eighth on 19 points after 13 games. Spurs slipped to fourth on 26 from 14.

Relive the action as Liverpool downed Spurs in the Premier League:

Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

57 mins: Yves Bissouma receives the ball on the edge of the box and is encouraged to shoot. Instead he sends it to Royal who leaps over the ball allowing it to roll through to Bentancur on the right.

Bentancur spots Sessegnon arriving on the opposite side of the area near the back post but overhits his cross and the attack breaks down.

Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

54 mins: Chance! Liverpool’s first proper chance of the half comes from a run off the ball from Darwin Nunez who splits the Spurs defence and meets Harvey Elliott’s forward pass.

Nunez carries the ball into the box then squares it to Mo Salah whose first time effort is plucked out of the air by Hugo Lloris.

Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

51 mins: Off the woodwork!

Spurs’ corner gets delivered onto the head of Eric Dier who turns it into the waiting arms of Alisson. Liverpool then restart play but Tottenham recover the ball and Dier curls a teasing pass into the box.

It bobbles through to Sessegnon on the left side of the penalty area. He pulls it back to Perisic who then smokes a shot onto the crossbar!

Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

48 mins: It’s a bright start from Spurs who fly down the left this time. Perisic floats his cross over to the back post but Darwin Nunez is back to help out and he nods the ball behind after scrambling over Emerson Royal.

Second half: Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

Kick off: Spurs get the ball rolling once more at the Tottenham Hotpsur stadium. No changes from either manager at the break.

The home side drive down the right where Emerson Royal swings a cross into the box. Konate deals with the initial ball but it bounces out to Sessegnon whose follow up deflects behind for a corner.

Newcastle thrash Southampton to seal fourth straight win and move into top three

Miguel Almiron scored his seventh goal in as many games as Newcastle United beat Southampton 4-1 at St Mary’s.

The Paraguay international continued his hot streak in front of goal, breaking the deadlock in the 35th minute.

Substitute Chris Wood, who replaced Callum Wilson at half-time, doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 58th minute before Joe Willock quickly made it 3-0.

Romain Perraud pulled one back for the hosts late but the celebrations were short-lived as Bruno Guimaraes fired in the Magpies’ fourth a minute later.

With England boss Gareth Southgate looking on, Saints lost possession early with a sloppy turnover in midfield as the Magpies worked the ball to Jacob Murphy on the far left, but his cross-cum-shot was easily caught by Gavin Bazunu.

Michael Olise hits late winner as Crystal Palace come from behind to defeat West Ham

Michael Olise curled home a stoppage-time winner as Crystal Palace finally broke their duck on the road with a dramatic 2-1 victory at West Ham United.

Said Benrahma had fired West Ham into the lead with a sizzling strike before Wilfried Zaha hauled Palace level before the interval.

There was VAR controversy 10 minutes from the end when Michail Antonio went down after being tugged by Marc Guehi and referee Paul Tierney gave a penalty, only to overturn his decision after consulting the pitchside monitor.

Instead, with the clock running down, Antonio wastefully chipped a cross into the arms of Palace keeper Vicente Guaita and within seconds, the visitors had broken up the other end and scored.

It meant West Ham’s six-match winning streak at home came to an end, while Palace secured their first away win in the Premier League this season.

Aston Villa start Unai Emery era with convincing win over Man United

A new era for Aston Villa began with a reminder for their opponents that rebuilding under a new manager is rarely a straightforward process. Unai Emery’s first game in charge brought a famous and fully deserved win that ended Manchester United’s nine-game unbeaten run, punctured the sense of progress that Erik ten Hag has built of late and inflicted United’s first Premier League defeat at Villa Park since 1995.

It was after that game – which also finished 3-1 – that Alan Hansen claimed Alex Ferguson’s side would “win nothing with kids”. That infamously proved to be an overly pessimistic assessment but, 27 years later, it would be hard to be too critical of this United performance. Even their goal was scored by a Villa player, with Luke Shaw’s effort deflecting in off Jacob Ramsey to offer brief hope of a fightback that never arrived.

From Villa, this was the type of disciplined, organised and highly effective display that Emery has built a career upon and may be exactly what is needed to resurrect their season and stave off the threat of relegation. Leon Bailey’s crisp strike and Lucas Digne’s wonderful free kick established an early two-goal lead that was momentarily halved on the cusp of half time, only to be restored by Ramsey after the break and then comfortably defended.

Half-time: Tottenham 0-2 Liverpool

45+1 mins: Tottenham have tended to grow into games this season performing their best football in the second half of matches. They’ll need to do so again here as they head into the break two goals behind Liverpool.

Mo Salah has a brace and seems to have rediscovered his best form. Will the Reds go on to win from here?
