Tottenham had 12 corners in the first half against West Ham, only against Aston Villa in December 2012 (15) have they had more against a side on record (since 2003-04). Indeed, it's the most of any Premier League side since Manchester City against Manchester United in March last season (also 12). Regardless, they proved ineffective and must be better in the second period, as West Ham have shown great competency with their own counter-attacks. In that first half, Spurs just over-performed their 0.99 xG, and had to wait until 34 minutes for their first shot on target. West Ham however, exceeded their 0.42 xG well, considering the medium of counters and breakaways with their dynamic midfield three, being the only forward route. Their issue remains in sloppy dispossession, as Paqueta gave the ball away for the Spurs goal, and even picked up a yellow card after another poor run.

Madley blows his whistle and the first half ends 1-1 in North London. Despite early pressure from the hosts, West Ham struck first in this London derby. Johnson and Son fired agonisingly wide either side of a Kudus strike that Vicario had to save, yet it would be the Ghanaian whose next effort was decisive. In the 18th minute, West Ham countered and a deep cross from the left found Bowen. He was able to keep the attack alive after being blocked, with the help of Wan-Bissaka, before jinking down the right byline to pull back a deflected ball back for Kudus to smash past Vicario as Porro watched on. After this, Tottenham failed to assert themselves from a plethora of corners. However, the attacking intent grew. Johnson somehow missed from close range under pressure from Paqueta in the 28th minute, before Porro forced an excellent save from Areola with a deflected shot from range. While it kept looking like West Ham would somehow survive, they ultimately conceded as the break neared. Kulusevski restored parity with an excellent effort off of both posts after getting fed by Maddison and cutting back onto his left-foot to send Areola to the turf despondently despite getting a hand on the ball.
