Tuchel - Chelsea 'have no foot in the final' despite 2-0 lead over Spurs in EFL Cup

Chelsea booked their place in the Carabao Cup final with a 3-0 semi-final aggregate win over Tottenham, whose hopes of a comeback were denied by VAR misery.

Thomas Tuchel’s men did half the job in last week’s first leg at Stamford Bridge when they won 2-0 and Antonio Rudiger’s first-half goal in north London settled matters, setting up a Wembley date against either Liverpool or Arsenal next month.

They will get a chance to claim a sixth League Cup and give Tuchel the opportunity of winning a third trophy in just over 14 months in the job.

Spurs were well beaten over the course of the two games, but it could have been different had technology not ruled against them on three occasions in the second leg.

Referee Andre Marriner twice awarded penalties that were overturned while Harry Kane had a goal ruled out for offside as they missed out on a second successive appearance in the final.

Reaction from Rudiger

Antonio Rudiger was awarded the man of the match award for scoring the only goal of the game and putting in a solid defensive performance at the back for Chelsea. He spoke to Sky Sports after the match saying:

In the home leg, we were in total control. They came back in the second half, like today, and they were more dangerous today because of our lack of focus.

“I knew it my head! I was hoping it would go in, so it was good. I’m working on getting into better positions. Last time we played here, I scored, so it is good to help the team and it was the most important thing to lead by example.

“I am enjoying this chapter. I think it is the best time of my career.”

Chelsea show superior class against Tottenham to reach Carabao Cup final

Having spent two years at Stamford Bridge, Antonio Conte didn’t need this defeat to realise the standards at the top level. Chelsea went and reminded him anyway as they beat the Italian’s Tottenham side 1-0 to make it 3-0 on aggregate and reach the final of the League Cup.

For all the debate about his team lately, Thomas Tuchel has kept up a remarkable record of reaching the final of every cup he’s entered - and is now the first Chelsea manager to reach the final of every major competition. He is now one game away from a second trophy, after last season’s Champions League.

Tonight was a good night for VAR too. Three decisions had to be looked, two penalty shouts and a goal for Spurs. All three went against Tottenham and got overturned but all three decisions from VAR were the correct ones.

Tottenham 0 - 1 Chelsea (0-3 agg)

Chelsea have won all three of their games against Tottenham this season by an aggregate score of 6-0. The last team to beat Spurs 3+ times in a season without conceding a single goal was Arsenal in 2013/14.

Chelsea progressed through to the Carabao Cup final after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the second leg of their semi-final on Tuesday.

Antonio Rudiger’s early header extended Chelsea’s lead to three goals and gave Spurs a mountain to climb after goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini failed to claim a corner.

Thomas Tuchel’s side will now face the winners of the other semi-final between Liverpool and Arsenal.

Here are five things we learned:

Tottenham 0 - 1 Chelsea (0-3 agg)

This is the second time Thomas Tuchel will be taking his Chelsea team to Wembley after also reaching the FA Cup final last season.

Two domestic cup finals and a Champions League win for Tuchel in less than a year in charge. Not a bad start to his time at Chelsea is it?

Full-time: Tottenham 0 - 1 Chelsea (0-3 agg)

90+9 mins: There goes the final whistle! Chelsea are in the Carabao Cup final! They have reached a 15th major final (and the 18th of the Abramovich era) since Spurs last won a trophy.

The second semi-final gets underway tomorrow after the first leg between Arsenal and Liverpool was postponed last week. Who will join Chelsea in the final?

Tottenham 0 - 1 Chelsea (0-3 agg)

90+9 mins: A tussle between Kane anf Loftus-Cheek in Chelsea’s final third sees the Tottenham captain come away with the ball. He shoots from just outside the box and has his shot blocked by Sarr.

Tottenham then win a corner that’s whipped nicely into the box. The ball bobbles over to the left side and Kane keeps it alive before laying it off to Sessegnon. He shoots but forces another sharp save out of Kepa Arrizabalaga!

Tottenham 0 - 1 Chelsea (0-3 agg)

90+6 mins: Bryan Gil wins a free kick in his own half and Tottenham take it quickly knocking the ball back to Gollini. He fires it over to the left wing where Spurs win a throw in.

There’s not much happening out there for the home team.
