Saints remain bottom of the table despite an upturn in performance level under Ruben Selles; defeat last time out means they are still two points from safety but it’s so tight at the bottom that a win could see them up into 16th.
As for Spurs, three wins in their last four despite uneven performances mean they sit fourth, a point ahead of Newcastle who clinched a win on Friday night. Antonio Conte remains under pressure for a fairly poor season overall, but clinching a top-four finish remains the objective.

Tottenham’s goal a minute into added time gives Conte’s side a 1-0 lead over Southampton at the half-time interval, after a stop-start opening 45 minutes. It certainly hasn’t gone according to plan for either coach so far, with an incredible four injury substitutions - split two apiece - made in the first half. Richarlison was removed after just five minutes due to a hamstring injury, which team-mate Davies would also succumb to a half-hour later. Saints have lost both of their starting centre-backs due to various ailments, with Salisu and Maitland-Niles now the makeshift pairing due to the absences of Bella-Kotchap and Bednarek. Despite the lack of any rhythm, Spurs managed to capitalise in the late stages of the frame, with Porro’s lashed finish beating Bazunu high in the middle of his goal.

Ward-Prowse is again tasked with taking a set-piece, this time putting it right onto the line of the goalkeeper but Forster emerges from the crowd with a strong punch to clear the danger.

Ward-Prowse takes a corner short to Armstrong, who picks out Walker-Peters with a pass to the edge of the penalty area. The full-back takes a touch to set himself and shapes to curl a shot towards the top corner but the former Tottenham player sends it high over the bar.

We can expect a fair bit of injury time added to the end of the first half despite no goals, with four changes taking place in the opening frame. Neither side has been able to get any rhythm, with hurt players and the referee's whistle constaly halting play.
