'Spirit high after beating Liverpool' - Ten Hag on morale-boosting win

Manchester United travel to Southampton for Saturday’s early Premier League kick off as they look to build on the back of their impressive 2-1 victory over Liverpool last time out. Erik ten Hag’s men displayed a level of energy and intensity that has been lacking at Old Trafford in recent times and avoided a third consecutive defeat after losses to Brighton and Brentford.

There is a now an optimism around the team and they will have to live up to their own standards if they are to beat a Southampton side that recorded their first win of the season against Leicester City last weekend.

After a 4-1 hammering from Tottenham and a 2-2 draw with Leeds, the Saints responded to a James Maddison goal to come from behind and claim a 2-1 victory away at the Foxes thanks to Che Adams’ brace. It was their second game in a row that they’ve claim points from losing positions and manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be hoping to get stuck into this shaky Manchester United side this afternoon.

Follow all the action from St Mary’s as Southampton host Manchester United in the Premier League:

Gabriel Magalhaes goes from zero to hero as Arsenal hit back to beat Fulham

Gabriel Magalhaes went from zero to hero as he atoned for gifting Fulham the lead by scoring the winning goal and extending Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season.

The Brazil defender was badly caught out by Aleksandar Mitrovic as the Gunners came from behind to win 2-1 and retain their place at the top of the table.

Mitrovic’s goal, his 100th for Fulham and his fourth of the season – already more than he managed in the entirety of their relegation campaign two years ago – gave the visitors hope of continuing their own unbeaten start to the season.

A landmark for Mitrovic

Aleksandar Mitrovic netted his 100th goal for Fulham but he’ll be gutted tonight that it was during a losing cause.

It’s also his fourth goal of the season for the Cottagers which is more than he managed in his previous top-flight campaign for Fulham.

Mitrovic’s thoughts

Fulham striker Alexsander Mitrovic on the defeat: “Hurts a lot. That is football, sometimes you win, last week last minute but today we lost. We gave everything out there, we fought until the end but we conceded two unlucky goals. First was rebound, second was after ricocheted. Very sad we didn’t take any points but we move on.

“We are here we are going to challenge everything, we will try to push hard and challenge every team, no matter who we face. We have to learn from some mistakes. In a few situations we had to be a bit more clinical. They have had a really good season so far, it is a tough place to come. Plenty more points to play for.”

More reaction from Arsenal

Arsenal’s matchwinner, Gabriel, told Sky Sports: “After I lost the ball my head was down, but my brothers kept saying ‘let’s go’. I lifted my head up – my team-mates were a big help to me.

“After the referee said handball, I just asked God. I’m so happy with my team and the three points. It’s a big fight. I’m so happy.”

Odegaard’s post-match reaction

Arsenal midfielder Martin Odegaard spoke to Sky Sports following Arsenal’s victory: “It was brilliant. We knew it was going to be a tough game. We fought, showed great team spirit and it’s an amazing feeling.

“We played really well in the first half, we just missed the goal but that happens. He showed great character to come back and score the winning goal. It shows the character of the team. When someone makes a mistake, we lift them back up.

“We have to stay calm, take it game by game, work hard and win the next game. That’s the mindset.

“It’s a great chemistry with the fans. We made a mistake with the first goal but they kept supporting us. We’re grateful for all the support we get.”
