Sheffield United better team than their results show - Arteta

Rampant Arsenal made history with a 6-0 win away to shambolic Sheffield United as Mikel Arteta’s side moved back to within two points of the Premier League summit.

Having seen title rivals Liverpool edge past Nottingham Forest and Manchester City defeat Manchester United, Mikel Arteta’s men knew they had to respond at the Championship-bound Blades.

Arsenal did so in style and could easily have struck more than the five first-half goals they managed at Bramall Lane, where the Monday evening mauling was completed by a Ben White thunderbolt.

This was the Gunners’ seventh straight Premier League win and saw them become the first English league side to win three consecutive away games by five or more goals.

By contrast, the Blades have now conceded five or more in four successive home games in all competitions.

FULL TIME! Sheffield United 0-6 Arsenal

There was a time when the scoreline indelibly associated with Arsenal was 1-0. Not now, and if there were points earlier in the season when Mikel Arteta seemed to be paying tribute to George Graham’s low-risk, low-scoring side, now it is more likely to be 5-0 to the Arsenal. Or, in this case, a second 6-0 away win in a month.

Arteta’s Arsenal are the roundheads who have reinvented themselves as cavaliers. There are times when title-chasing teams can find the goals dry up in the run-in. But Arsenal have grown more expansive, more exciting, more ebullient. They became the first team in Premier League history to score five or more times in three consecutive away matches and the division’s top scorers. And if they were aided by the ineptitude of Sheffield United, who plummeted to a historic low by conceding at least five goals for the fourth successive home game, this was a stunning demonstration of attacking strength.

FULL TIME! Sheffield United 0-6 Arsenal

MIkel Arteta confirmed Gabriel Martinelli picked up a “cut” to his foot but avoided a serious injury during Arsenal’s record-breaking Premier League win at Sheffield United on Monday night.

The Gunners produced another devastating attacking display as they thrashed Chris Wilder’s side 6-0 for their seventh straight win in the Premier League.

Arsenal have scored 31 goals over that run, and became the first team in English league history to win three consecutive away games by a margin of five or more goals. The Gunners also beat Burnley 5-0 and West Ham 6-0 last month, both in the Premier League.

Martinelli scored Arsenal’s third goal, inside just 15 minutes, but the sight of the Brazilian hobbling off during the second half would have been a concern for Arteta ahead of a crucial run of fixtures.

Bukayo Saka was also withdrawn at half-time, with Arteta confirming the England international was “feeling sick” when he was replaced by Fabio Vieira.

Arsenal magnificent. Sheffield United woeful.

It wasn’t quite top against bottom, but after cutting the gap to Liverpool and Manchester City, Arsenal can now go there if they beat Brentford on Saturday.

That’s seven wins in a row in the Premier League.

Lovely play from Havertz to set it up.

That could change though...
