Liverpool team-mates Salah and Mane prepare to go head-to-head in AFCON final as Egypt face Senegal

Follow live reaction from the Africa Cup of Nations final after Senegal beat Egypt to win what has been a thrilling tournament in Cameroon. After four weeks of competition, the final saw the continent’s two best players in Senegal’s Sadio Mane and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah compete for a first international honour, with both star forwards having played integral roles in their respective nation’s run to the final.

An intense contest went all the way to penalties where Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy kept out substitute Mohanad Lasheen’s attempt, leaving Liverpool’s Mane, who had earlier missed a spot kick in normal time, to step up and win it. And the Reds striker made no mistake from 12 yards a second time around to secure a 4-2 victory and give his country a first-ever victory in the tournament.

It was no more than Senegal deserved after dominating for long periods only to be denied repeatedly denied by Egypt goalkeeper Gabaski as the game finished goalless after 120 gruelling minutes. Mane’s winning kick sparked jubilant scenes for Senegal and deep disappointment for Egypt.

ET Senegal 0 - 0 Egypt

105 mins: The first half of extra-time comes to an end. The best chance of that half came to Bamba Dieng but his header was parried wide by the Egyptian goalkeeper. Gabaski has had a great game. Senegal haven’t created a lot of chances but he’s kept out the best ones including a Sadio Mane penalty.

Egypt are happy to play for penalties. They won’t overstress themselves to earn a winner. If there’s going to be a winning goal in extra-time Senegal are going to have to score it.

Bamba Dieng leaps into the air and nods the ball into the ground. It’s sneaking into the far corner but Gabaski dives across to his left and palms the ball wide of goal!

The last eight AFCON finals that have gone to extra-time have all also gone to penalties. Aliou Cisse is giving his players an animated team talk as they huddle on the pitch.

I wonder if Sadio Mane is thinking about that penalty miss.

90+3 mins: No we can’t. For the fourth knockout game in a row Egypt take their opponents to extra-time. This is the first time Senegal will play an extra 30 minutes in the tournament.

Egypt must have the advantage of experience but they’ll be tired. In truth Egypt have taken the sting out of the game over the last 15 minutes or so.

90 mins: Three minutes of added time to play. Is there time for one more great chance before the end?
