Scotland v Hungary LIVE: Reaction as Scotland crash out to last-gasp goal after Varga horror collision

More heartbreak for Scotland at major international tournaments. It’s 12 World Cups and Euros now where they have qualified and been in the group stage - but gone no further.

Their last match won at a European Championship or World Cup remains in 1996.

Scotland keeper Angus Gunn:

“The goal at the end was because we were going for it but the performance showed the fans what it means to us.

“When we do look back, we created chances and had opportunities - it didn’t fall for us, deflections didn’t go our way. We’re out and nothing really matters anymore.

“It was a bit painful but hopefully the guy [Varga] is alright. I can’t remember too much about it.”

A positive update here from Hungary’s official Twitter (or X, should we say) account:

“Barnabas Varga’s condition is stable! The player [...] is currently in one of the hospitals in Stuttgart! We will inform you immediately if there is any news about [his]status!”

Varga was down for nearly ten minutes before being stretchered away.

The best...or the worst, depending on your perspective... of that last-minute action which settled the match and Scotland’s Euro 2024 fate. Elation and desperation.

Scotland captain Andy Robertson speaking after the match:

“We knew we had to win, both teams had to and they’ve hit us on the counter-attack. It’ll take a long time to get over this one. That’s football.

“We had a lot of possession first half without really doing anything with it but we were controlling the game. We had to find that cutting edge and we knew there’d come a time we could go for it that bit more but we got sucker-punched at the end.

“We have to hope for the future but that’s not for tonight. It’s a tough one, with international football you lose players sometimes, we’ll see what happens with that. The lads are absolutely gutted. What I will say is thank you to the country because we felt the excitement back home and sorry for letting you down.”

Hungary striker Barnabas Varga was stretchered off during his side’s crunch clash with Scotland after a horrific collision in a scary moment at Euro 2024.

With the score at 0-0 in the 68th minute of the Group A clash, that both sides needed to win to keep their realistic hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive, Varga, Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn and defender Anthony Ralston all collided while competing for a ball in the air.

One final launched ball for Scotland but that’s it - the whistle goes, Hungary get the late win and Scotland are out of Euro 2024!
