Tottenham have the chance to move back into the top four when they take on Southampton at Wembley Stadium in the Boxing Day early kick-off as the first of eight Premier League games.

Spurs striker Harry Kane seized his final chance to break Alan Shearer’s record of 36 Premier League goals in a calendar year, with the mark having stood for 22 years since Shearer helped fire Blackburn Rovers to the title until Kane headed in the opening goal of the match.

Spurs do have injury concerns on their hands though, with Eric Dier a doubt after suffering a calf strain and manager Mauricio Pochettino ready to rotate his side in order to avoid fatigue over the festive period. Southampton meanwhile are without the suspended Charlie Austin, who has been banned for three matches due to violent conduct, while defenders Cedric Soares and Ryan Bertand are doubtful.

49 mins: GOAL! TOTTENHAM 3 SOUTHAMPTON 0:

Three goals and, surely, three points for Tottenham! Southampton had come out fighting after the break - Mario Lemina had just the crossbar - but they have now been killed off by Dele Alli. The England youngster was afforded plenty of room on the left, meaning he could cut inside unchallenged before curling a low shot around Fraser Forster's outstretched arm from 22 yards out.

51 mins: GOAL! TOTTENHAM 4 SOUTHAMPTON 0:

Son Heung-min makes it four! Seeking an immediate response, Nathan Redmond lost possession on the edge of the Tottenham area, allowing the home side to break at pace. Buoyed by his goal seconds earlier, Dele Alli drove through the vacant centre of the pitch, eventually finding Son on the right. The South Korean took one touch to control before driving his shot across Fraser Forster and into the bottom left corner.

54 mins: It's not all good news for Tottenham, however, at the start of this second half. Mousa Dembele has gone down off the ball, and, after receiving treatment, will be replaced. It's Mousa for Moussa as Sissoko takes over in midfield.

58 mins: Almost perfection from Harry Kane! The striker goes so close to completing his hat-trick in the most wondrous fashion, meeting Danny Rose's raking crossfield pass from the left on the volley, but his shot fell centimetres wide of the far post.

64 mins: GOAL! TOTTENHAM 4 SOUTHAMPTON 1:

A double change for Southampton brings renewed hope. Seconds after Manolo Gabbiadini and Dusan Tadic were introduced, the visitors pull a goal back through Sofiane Boufal. Not for the first time this afternoon, Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris was unconvincing in his goalkeeping, allowing Boufal's admittedly fierce drive to creep in at the near post after Shane Long had found the Moroccan in plenty of space with an instinctive header. Is there time for a sensational comeback?

67 mins: GOAL! TOTTENHAM 5 SOUTHAMPTON 1:

Harry Kane has his second hat-trick in four days and his eighth of 2017. Played into the area by Dele Alli's angled pass, the red-hot Tottenham striker held off the challenge of Maya Yoshida before dinking a sumptuous left-foot shot over the helpless Fraser Forster. Southampton's resistance didn't last long; Harry Kane's legacy will last for many, many years.

74 mins: Shane Long's goal drought goes on after Jan Vertonghen's wonderful clearance from underneath his own crossbar denies the Irishman the simplest of tap-ins. Long looked odds-on to break his 34-game duck when Gabbiadini crossed from the left, but Tottenham's reliable Belgian burst back to divert over.

77 mins: There looks to be an unexpected change afoot when referee Graham Scott pulls up in trying to keep pace with a Southampton attack. However, the arbiter doesn't fancy giving up his spot in the middle and manages to run it off over the next couple of minutes. Hardcore. There's no such longevity for Son Heung-min, whose excellent game is over; the South Korean is replaced by Erik Lamela.

82 mins: GOAL! TOTTENHAM 5 SOUTHAMPTON 2:

Another goal, more questionable keeping and Dusan Tadic has reduced Southampton's deficit to three. After Hugo Lloris had flapped at a corner, the Serbian substitute sent a looping shot back. Tottenham's French custodian tried to make amends with a save but only succeeded in flicking the ball beyond Harry Kane and into the top left corner.

89 mins: Southampton are enjoying some late pressure. It's the very definition of too little, too late.
