From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Both Swansea and Newcastle have made underwhelming starts to the season, sitting in 13th and 14th place respectively. Things have been particularly frustrating for Magpies boss Rafael Benitez, who did not receive the financial backing that he expected in this summer’s transfer window.

Meanwhile, Swans boss Paul Clement has experienced either a good or a bad transfer window, depending on whose words you believe. The ex-Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Chelsea assistant coach opted to sell Swansea’s star men – Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente – for a combined £60m, bringing in Renato Sanches and Wilfried Bony as approximate replacements.

Bony is a former Swansea player, of course, and will want to make an instant impact at the stadium he calls his “garden”. Sanches, winner of the 2016 ‘Golden Boy’ award as Europe’s best player aged 21 or under, will be even keener to impress; his career has stalled at Clement’s ex-employees Bayern.

Both Swansea and Newcastle claimed their first wins of the season last week, and should be in confident moods going into the game. Newcastle will be particularly rejuvenated after last Saturday’s 3-0 victory over West Ham - the sense of relief amongst everyone at the club was palpable.

Renato Sanches: The 20-year-old is aiming to reignite his career at Swansea after a desperately disappointing year with Bayern Munich, and could make his debut against Newcastle. Once considered the next wonderkid of European football, Sanches will be desperate to impress.

Best stat…

2: Swansea are something of a bogey team for Newcastle, with the Magpies having beaten the Swans just twice in ten Premier League matches between the sides.

Remember when…

Papiss Cissé scored a superb goal for Newcastle against Swansea in April 2012. The pressing ontological question is: was it a chip or a lob?

Player to watch…

Christian Atsu: Newcastle’s first summer signing is in excellent form. He shows constant willingness to attack full-backs, and provided a superb assist for Joselu in last week’s win over West Ham.

Past three meetings…

Newcastle 3 (Lascelles, Sissoko, Townsend) Swansea 0, Premier League, April 2016

Swansea 2 (Gomis, Ayew) Newcastle 0, Premier League, August 2015

Newcastle 2 (Pérez, De Jong) Swansea 3 (Oliveira, Sigurdsson, Cork) Premier League, March 2016

Form guide…

Swansea: WWDLWW

Newcastle: WWLLLW

Odds…

Swansea to win: 23/17

Newcastle to win: 9/4

Draw: 9/4

Just don't tell them it's because he's in Spain negotiating for a job back in La Liga.

15 mins: Sanches is at it again, hustling, bustling, winning possession and looking every bit one of the best young players in Europe.

Then he sends a cross straight at Rob Elliot and looks like a poor man's Regi Blinker.

Sam Dymond10 September 2017 16:18

20 mins: The early frenetic pace of the game has gone, and Swansea are now opting for a more patient approach as they control the game in front of the Newcastle defence. The slow build-up certainly suits the patched-up visitors who, let's be honest, don't always deal well when teams up the ante.

Sam Dymond10 September 2017 16:23

24 mins: A needlessly conceded free-kick from Javier Manquillo by the corner flag gives Carroll opportunity to cross into a packed box. Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles keeps cool, flicking the teasing cross away to safety.

Sam Dymond10 September 2017 16:26

27 mins: Big chance for Newcastle! A long searching pass from Ritchie in the right-back position has Federico Fernandez in all sorts of trouble as he back-pedals towards his own goal. The Swansea defender does manager to make contact, but his attempted flicked header falls perfectly for the arriving Jacob Murphy. Taking the chance on the full, the former Norwich forward only has to lift the ball over a stranded Lukasz Fabianski but gets his angles wrong and sends a shot into the away fans instead.

33 mins: Newcastle win the first corner of the game, and it's almost worth waiting for. After Ciaran Clark fails to make the most of the delivery finding him at the far post, the ball is worked out wide left once again. Matt Ritchie swings his second cross into the box where Joselu glances a header towards the far corner. It looks a certain goal until Fabianski arrives with a most wonderful fingertip flick around the post. It is a truly brilliant save!

Sam Dymond10 September 2017 16:36

35 mins: Newcastle players scream for a penalty! Mikel Merino bursts forward into the box, and when Alfie Mawson goes to ground so too does the Borussia Dortmund loanee. It looks a good shout in real time but replays show the Newcastle made a play, thrusting his foot in the direction of the defender and then throwing himself down. It's excellent refereeing from Mike Jones who says no.

Sam Dymond10 September 2017 16:38

38 mins: Now it's Swansea's turn to press. Jordan Ayew is offered acres of space to run into and lets fly from 20 yards with a shot that Rob Elliot is required to turn around the post. The resulting corner is planted straight on to the head of Mawson but the centre-half's effort travels just wide of the post.

Sam Dymond10 September 2017 16:40

41 mins: Tammy Abraham makes Merino look foolish not once but twice with a cheeky piece of skill. The Spaniard manages to floor him at the second attempt after his first foul failed to do the job. His punishment is a lengthy lecture from Mike Jones.

Sam Dymond10 September 2017 16:44

44 mins: Lascelles gives it some Phil Jones inside his own penalty area by bellyflopping on the ball. Among the flaying limbs, there are cries for a handball but once again the referee rightly dismisses the penalty claims.
