From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Chelsea can extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table with victory at the home of basement club Sunderland.

Antonio Conte's side have won each of their last nine league games but David Moyes' men will hope they can frustrate the league leaders and lift themselves off the foot of the table.

It’s a big game for…

Diego Costa: With Eden Hazard sidelined with a slight knock, even more pressure rests on the powerful forward’s shoulders to produce the goals for Chelsea tonight. Costa will need to deliver on Wearside if the Blues are to maintain their winning run and extend their gap at the top of the table to six points.

Weird /best stat…

19: Chelsea have won 19 of the last 23 Premier League meetings and haven't lost successive games against Sunderland since March 2001.

Remember when…

Chelsea 1 (Eto’o) Sunderland 2 (Wickham, Borini), April 2014

Former Chelsea forward Fabio Borini came back to haunt to Blues in 2014 with a late penalty which dented the home side’s fading title hopes and gave Sunderland a hope of survival with four games to go.

Player to watch…

Victor Moses: Arguably the club’s most improved player, Moses has reinvented himself as a highly competent wing-back under Antonio Conte this season. Despite his added defensive responsibilities, Moses still looks to get forward and provide width for Chelsea at every opportunity.

Past three-meetings…

SUNDERLAND 3 (Khazri, Borini, Defoe) CHELSEA 2 (Costa, Matic), May 2016

CHELSEA 3 (Ivanovic, Pedro, Oscar) SUNDERLAND 1 (Borini), December 2015

CHELSEA 3 (Costa, Remy 2) SUNDERLAND 1 (Fletcher), May 2015

45+2 mins: GOAL! CRYSTAL PALACE 0 MANCHESTER UNITED 1:

There was one minute of stoppage time signalled at Selhurst Park, but, in the second minute added on, Paul Pogba had broken the deadlock. Juan Mata curled a free-kick into the penalty area, Zlatan Ibrahimovic bundled the ball on, and Pogba - marginally offside perhaps - slotted past Wayne Hennessey from close range. It hasn't been pretty, but United won't care.

SECOND HALF KICK-OFF: As the eight o'clock games take a break for half-time, the quarter to eight ones are back underway. Liverpool, Chelsea and West Ham all lead, but each by just a single goal. All. To. Play. For.

60 mins: GOAL! MIDDLESBROUGH 0 LIVERPOOL 2:

Five in five for Divock Origi! Flowing one-touch football cut the Middlesbrough midfield and defence to pieces, and when the goalscorer of the first, Adam Lallana, squared a low cross into the middle, the in-form Belgian striker slotted past Victor Valdes.
