From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Southampton are in a positive situation as they prepare for the final day of the season. Manolo Gabbiadini’s winner on Tuesday night against relegation rivals Swansea was a huge step towards securing Premier League safety.

They are safe with a win or draw, and should still survive with a loss. Swansea will have to win and overcome a nine-goal disparity in goal difference to usurp the Saints. Southampton should be safe. Manchester City are the visitors to St. Mary’s, and the Champions still have something to play for. Pep Guardiola’s team are chasing records, and looking to become the first team to total 100 points in an English top division season. A win will take them to that figure.

That is why Mark Hughes will not be sleeping entirely soundly. Guardiola has immense attacking reserves at his disposal; Manchester City score far more goals than anyone else in the division. Swansea face relegated Stoke, and will target a big win against a side with nothing to play for. Stranger things have happened.

Preview

What time does it start?

Southampton vs Manchester City kicks off at 3pm.

Where can I watch it?

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports Mix from 2.55pm.

It’s a big game for…

Leroy Sane and Kevin De Bruyne – Sane’s three assists against Brighton on Wednesday took the German level with teammate De Bruyne (who was an unused substitute) at the top of the Premier League assist charts with 15. Either could add to their totals against Southampton and grab the assist king crown outright.

Best Stat

+78 – Manchester City’s goal difference thus far this year. They will break the record for the best goal difference accumulated in a Premier League season, which currently sits at +71 (Chelsea, 2009-10)

Remember when…

A Sadio Mane hat-trick helped Southampton to a 4-2 victory in May of 2016. Kelechi Iheanacho scored twice for Manchester City, including a beautiful consolation late on.

Player to watch…

Alex McCarthy entered this season firmly behind Fraser Forster, but Forster’s poor form gave McCarthy an opportunity in late December and he has performed well since. McCarthy was man-of-the-match on Tuesday and could be in for a busy night.

Past-three meetings…

Manchester City 2 (De Bruyne, Sterling) Southampton 1 (Romeu), Premier League, November 2017

Southampton 0 Manchester City 3 (Kompany, Sane, Aguero), Premier League, April 2017

Manchester City 1 (Iheanacho) Southampton 1 (Redmond), Premier League, October 2016

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the final day of the 2017/18 Premier League season.

Harry Latham-Coyle will be with you a couple of hours before kick-off, but in the meantime why not read Miguel Delaney's review of a strange but ultimately fascinating campaign:

Good afternoon all, and welcome to the final day of the 2017-18 Premier League Season. The Independent's live blog will have updates from every game as the season reaches its conclusion. My name is Harry Latham-Coyle and I will be with you throughout the afternoon.

Harry Latham-Coyle13 May 2018 13:02

We are a little under an hour away from team news being confirmed for this afternoon's ten games. Let's run down what is still to play for today...

Harry Latham-Coyle13 May 2018 13:07

The battle for fourth place is still on, but Liverpool are certainly in the driving seat. Chelsea could only manage a draw with Huddersfield in the week, leaving them two points behind Liverpool and with an insurmountable difference in goal difference. Chelsea must beat Newcastle at St James' Park and hope Brighton can shock Liverpool at Anfield.

Harry Latham-Coyle13 May 2018 13:12

It will take something truly astonishing for Swansea to survive. They lost at home to Southampton on Tuesday night, taking their opponents three points clear and with a far-superior goal difference. A ten-goal swing is needed, and Swansea haven't scored in their last four games. However...

Harry Latham-Coyle13 May 2018 13:16

Swansea play relegated Stoke, who have nothing to play for. And former manager Mark Hughes is now in charge of Southampton. Could Stoke roll over?

Harry Latham-Coyle13 May 2018 13:17

Southampton host Manchester City, about the only team in the country one could envisage scoring more than five, particularly as they chase the victory that would take them to 100 points for the season. It would be a truly extraordinary escape for Swansea, but anything can happen in football. 4-0 at the Liberty Stadium, 0-6 at St Mary's would send Southampton down. Surely not...

Harry Latham-Coyle13 May 2018 13:20

There is still the battle for the Golden Boot to sort out, too. Mohamed Salah has 31 goals and Harry Kane 28 heading into this afternoon. Kane loves a late-season hat-trick, and although Salah is expected to start for Liverpool, he may not play the full game with the Champions League Final just a couple of weeks away. It is again unlikely, but we've seen odd things occur on the final day before.

Harry Latham-Coyle13 May 2018 13:25

The top four assist-makers in this season's Premier League all ply their trade at the Etihad, and one of Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane will be the assist king this season. Sane drew level with his teammate against Brighton on Wednesday with a hat-trick of assists, taking him to 15 on the season. De Bruyne did not play in that game. Either, or both, could notch at least a couple more today.

Harry Latham-Coyle13 May 2018 13:29

Arsenal, and perhaps the Premier League, will bid farewell to Arsene Wenger today. His side are at the John Smith's Stadium to meet Huddersfield, who celebrated wildly on Wednesday after the draw at Stamford Bridge that secured survival. An entertaining Arsenal win would be a fitting conclusion to a remarkable career at the club for one of the Premier League's greatest managers.
