From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A first chance - some good work from Nathan Redmond on the left-hand side to get to the byline and swing a cross in but the header at the far post is tame and easily collected by Mathew Ryan in the Brighton goal
12 minutes
Jannik Vestergaard is certainly a large human being but he has considerable ability as a footballer, and shows it here, nearly catching out Shane Duffy with a curling lofted pass.
Duffy recovers to nod back to his goalkeeper. 0-0.
14 minutes
First real signs of life from Brighton. Solly March gets in behind Cedric Soares on the left and cuts back to Knockaert but the Frenchman's effort is blocked.
16 minutes
Brighton were vulnerable from set-pieces last season, but that one won't trouble them - Mohamed Elyounoussi's ball from 40-yards out is very wayward and goes out for a goal-kick.
19 minutes
The game has thus far been lacking in quality, with neither side committing many men forward. Cagey.
20 minutes
Two good chances for the hosts. First Danny Ings' effort is deflected wide after more good work from Southampton's talented left-side, and then the resulting corner pinballs around the box, finally falling somewhat unfortunately to Wesley Hoedt who slashes a volley over the bar.
24 minutes
Southampton have taken control of the game and are beginning to threaten the Brighton defence with regularity. Gareth Southgate is in attendance and will have been heartened by Nathan Redmond and Ryan Bertrand's strong starts to the game.
27 minutes
That is a great chance! Redmond is again the architect, a fortunate ricochet aiding his cut inside. He lofts the ball to the far post and Elyounoussi's free header bounces wide of the post. He should have done better.
Southampton on top, and Brighton are struggling to combat that left-sided combination.
