Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Newcastle United host Tottenham Hotspur in the first Premier League weekend of the season as Mauricio Pochettino’s side look to join Manchester United at the top of the table.

Harry Kane and Dele Alli both start for Spurs despite returning from their post-World Cup holiday at the start of the week, with the Magpies have summer signing Kennedy back in their ranks after joining for a second season-long loan.

With Jose Mourinho’s side securing an early victory in the form of a 2-1 win over Leicester City on Friday night, Spurs have an early chance to get off the mark as they travel north for the weekend’s early kick-off.

The match is the first of six games on Saturday, with Chelsea also in action as they take on Huddersfield Town at 3pm. The rest of the action sees Bournemouth face Cardiff City, Fulham host Crystal Palace and Watford entertain Brighton and Hove Albion, before Wolves and Everton face-off in the day’s late game.

Not just me that's unsure about this Spurs kit...

27 mins: Newcastle corner as Vertonghen is forced to turn it behind, Ritchie takes and after a ricochet Dummett gets a chance from the edge of the area, but he pulls it wide

29 mins: Aurier tries a wild shot but it's high and wide. Plenty of action for both sides as they continue to fly forward. Tottenham with the best of the play, but Newcastle still far from out of it

35 mins: The Newcastle fans have something to cheer about with a prolonged, positive spell of possession, they lose it and Spurs break forward, but Harry Kane has a weak effort and Newcastle can break again with Kenedy who has looked a bright spark. Absolutely frantic stuff, but Newcastle just missing that final ball, after some impressive play in midfield

38 mins: CLOSE! Harry Kane wins Tottenham a corner and Davinson Sanchez goes close to a third for the visitors, beating Shelvey to the header at the near post, but his effort goes across the face of goal, with no one alert to poke it home

42 mins: A poor ball from Harry Kane leaves Newcastle to break forward, and Kenedy is strong and quick and draws a foul from Eric Dier, who picks up a yellow card. Kenedy looking a good permanent addition to this side after his previous loan from Chelsea

HALF TIME: Newcastle United 1-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Headed goals are the difference as we go into the break at St James Park. A scrappy opener that Jan Vertonghen headed over the line gave Spurs the lead, before Joselu got Newcastle back into it. Spurs took the lead again through Dele, but it's been an open exciting game, all to play for in the second half

If Tottenham's kit looks like a Cadbury's mint crisp (there are other brands and chocolate bars available), then Newcastle's midfield is about as solid as a flake. Ki on the bench for Newcastle and Benitez may look to get him on in the second half, either as an extra body in the centre of the park, or in place of Diame.

Newcastle certainly not out of this one, so plenty for both managers to think about at the break...

There was a frantic start to this one, and here's just how important goal line technology is. 9mm!

SECOND HALF: We are back underway for the second half at St James Park
