Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

It’s a big game for…

Slaven Bilic. The West Ham manager is under increasing pressure to produce results following a disappointing start to the season. With the Hammers languishing just one point above the relegation zone, it’s understood that the club’s chiefs are starting to get a little bit tetchy to say the least. A victory at Old Trafford could help silence the doubters and hand the London club a much-needed three points to boost their confidence.

Remember when…

A late Winston Reid goal handed West Ham victory last May? Anthony Martial’s brace put United in charge following Diafra Sakho’s early opener but Bilic’s men fought back and it was Reid who had the last say in the 81st minute to clinch all three points for the Hammers.

Player to watch…

Henrikh Mkhitaryan. Having spent the last few months out in the wilderness, the Armenian returned on Thursday night to torment Feyenoord in the Europa League. It was a distinguished performance as Mkhitaryan showcased what he’s capable of. Should Mourinho hand him a start on Sunday, there’s no doubt that all eyes will be on the 27-year-old to see whether he can recreate his European form in the Premier League.

It's an anticlimactic strike. High and wide. He should be hitting the target from there.

Bolasie charges into the Southampton half, he beats his man and pulls the trigger but it goes wide.

His pace and power combination is enough to trouble any defence on his day.

Austin tests Stekelenburg from close range with a header, but once again the keeper steps up to the job and parries it wide. The Dutch keeper has put in a shift today.

Southampton continue to press forward, but they fail to find the final product. It's the same story for Koeman's men.

This is still anyone's game.

What a save from Forster! Bolasie leaps into the air and connects with the overhead kick beautifully. However, the lunging right leg of the keeper saves his side.

Lukaku picks up the ball and sprints towards the Southampton goal, but within seconds, he is surrounded by red and white shirts. It takes three of them to muscle him off the ball, but it worked and they regain possession. Safety in numbers and all that.

Redmond goes for goal from just inside of the box, but he is leaning too far back and it flies way over the bar. No test for Stekelenburg.

Everton are stringing the ball round well in the box, but Southampton are sitting deep and outplaying them. Bolasie goes down on the edge of the box and wins his side a free kick.
