Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

England and Everton goalkepeer Jordan Pickford’s costly blunder allowed out-of-favour Divock Origi to carve his own piece of Merseyside history with a Liverpool winner deep into added time at Anfield.

The close-range goal 45 seconds before the end of four minutes of added time came after Virgil van Dijk’s hopelessly-sliced shot was shovelled onto the crossbar by Pickford when it appeared to be going out.

It was a harsh way to end the game for Pickford, who made at least one fantastic save in the first half, but it sparked wild scenes with Reds boss Jurgen Klopp charging into the centre-circle to celebrate with goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who himself had produced a couple of brilliant saves to keep another clean sheet.

Origi had played just 11 minutes as a substitute this season in the 2-0 Champions League defeat against Red Star Belgrade in Serbia and his long-term prospects look bleak.

But whatever happens over the coming months his goal for the 1-0 victory will be remembered for extending Everton’s wait for a win at Anfield into a 20th year as the hosts made it 10 wins and nine draws to keep the pressure on Premier League leaders Manchester City, whose lead was cut to two points again.

Re-live the action below:

58 mins: CHANCE LIVERPOOL!

Mo Salah and Mane link up to good effect and the former tees up the latter but his bending shot goes very narrowly wide of the post.

Better from the reds.

Lookman warming up and he replaces Walcott after 62 mins.

65 mins: CHANCE EVERTON!

Lookman with the impact and he feeds Bernard on the right wing.

The Brazilian cuts inside and has a huge chance to beat the keeper but he can't get the bend on his shot and instead it's out for a goalkick.

Great stuff from Lookman.

67 mins: CHANCE LIVERPOOL!

This time Liverpool follow an Everton chance with one of their own as a nice dink ball from Shaqiri finds Robertson in his usual position on the left.

His cross was teasing and Mane just couldn't reach it.

Half-hearted appeals for a penalty but nothing given.

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 17:40

71 mins: Keita readying himself on the sidelines.

He replaces Shaqiri.

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 17:42

74 mins: Salah to be replaced by Sturridge.

The Englishman has been the scourge of Everton before and he will be hoping to do the same once again.

He's second on the list of all time top scorers from the bench for the Reds.

Can he net a huge one here?

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 17:46

79 mins: Little of note happening at the moment.

Can either of these sides pinch it towards the end?

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 17:51

80 mins: Feels odd to say this but Everton look the most likely at the minute.

Joe Gomez goes in the book for a foul on Richarlison.

The Reds seem frustrated.

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 17:52

81 mins: Firmino with a distinctively half-chance but Klopp still gave it the big reaction as his tame shot trickled wide.

Liverpool need more.

Origi is stripped and ready to come on.

Nathan Jacobs2 December 2018 17:54

83 mins: Roberto Firmino, who has been disappointing is replaced by a man who has scored 2 goals in 3 Merseyside derbies.

Divock Origi is on.
