Mohamed Salah finally returned to the lethal form Liverpool fans have come to expect after his first half strike sealed an unsteady victory against a valiant Huddersfield.

It was a serene rekindling of old Dortmund ties between Jurgen Klopp and David Wagner who conducted their post-match interviews as a pair but on the pitch Liverpool were decidedly sloppy and Huddersfield will rue a number of missed opportunities that could have dragged them out of the drop zone.

Salah's 50th Premier League goal came in the 24th minute after a deft ball by surprise Swiss starter Xherdan Shaqiri teed him up for a neat finish into the bottom corner.

The Egyptian reacted to his first goal for four games with a mixture of ecstasy and relief but it was then Huddersfield who began to take a foothold in the match when many might have expected this season's more ruthless Reds to add to their tally.

Jonathon Hogg belted a long-range effort against the post and just minutes later Alex Pritchard thought his close-range chip over Alisson had levelled the match before being ruled narrowly offside.

The pattern continued in the second half as Huddersfield continued to spurned opportunities which might have changed the fate of the game.

Jurgen Klopp brought on Fabinho to try and reinforce the protection in front of Liverpool's defence but even then Huddersfield substitute Steve Mounie wasted a glorious chance with less than ten minutes to go when the ball fortuitously bumbled to him in the box only to wildly thrash it skyward.

The victory put Liverpool back on equal footing with Manchester City, who walloped Burnley earlier in the day, and two in front of Chelsea after their draw with Manchester United.

Huddersfield, however, remain winless in nine and sit in the uncomfortable saddle of the relegation zone with just three points.

53 minutes

James Milner rushes on to a ball with Aaron Mooy looming and his first time blind pass is very wayward looking for Adam Lallana.

Better play from Huddersfield to work space for right-wing-back Florent Hadegjonaj, who loops a cross into the area.

Laurent Depoitre is strong in the air and he powerfully wins this one, but can't generate the power on the outswinging cross to beat a diving Alisson, who catches as he comes to floor.

Huddersfield continue to impress. They have had 63% of possession since the game's resumption.

Jurgen Klopp looks increasingly agitated despite his side's 1-0 lead.

Liverpool win a corner. Mohamed Salah will swing one in from the right...

In to a really dangerous area about four yards from goal but a Huddersfield man gets his head to it and nods clear.

Another Liverpool corner. Jonathan Hogg does well to block Mohamed Salah's 25 yard effort.

James Milner will take this one from the left.

Virgil Van Djik is unmarked to the far post but his side-footed volley back across goal is tame and easily grabbed by Jonas Lossl.

Great chance for Mohamed Salah!

Daniel Sturridge finds the Egyptian well breaking through the middle.

Salah controls on his chest, lines up his shot and with his left foot drives it just wide of the far post.

Twice Huddersfield put the ball in the box but the ball evades those in a blue and white shirt on both occasions, once courtesy of an excellent defensive header from Dejan Lovren.

They are still firmly in this game with 25 minutes to go.

Fabinho is being readied for Liverpool.

Adam Lallana gets an arm in the face from Philip Billing and stays down, but Michael Oliver waves play on.

Aaron Mooy crosses for Laurent Depoitre who tries to deftly flick past Alisson, but Dejan Lovren is right there to block.

Lallana appears to have some cramp. He may well be the man to be replaced.
