Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ashley Barnes' second-half winner clinched Burnley a 2-1 win at 10-man relegation rivals Huddersfield and lifted them out of the bottom three.

Barnes notched his fifth goal of the season after Chris Wood had cancelled out Steve Mounie's first-half opener for Huddersfield, who slumped to a club record eighth straight defeat.

The home side battled bravely despite being a man down for the entire second period following Christopher Schindler's dismissal for two yellow-card offences just before the break.

Burnley also ended with 10 men after substitute Robbie Brady's straight red card for a cynical challenge on Isaac Mbenza in the closing stages. Re-live the action below:

What time does it start?

Huddersfield vs Burnley kicks off at 7:45pm (GMT)

Player to watch

Johann Gudmundsson: The Icelandic midfielder has been a bright spark for Dyche at times this season with two goals and four assists. His ability at set pieces and his strong crossing makes him a real threat and if Burnley can keep him involved, he’ll create chances.

Form guide

Huddersfield: LLLLLL

Burnley: WLLLWL

Odds

Huddersfield to win: 59/50

Burnley to win: 29/10

Draw: 41/20

Prediction

Huddersfield 2-2 Burnley: I think we could be looking at plenty of goals in this one, with two teams fighting to win what would be a vital three points, especially for Huddersfield. Wagner will know that a loss puts them in serious danger so I feel they’ll come out fighting but in the end only grab a draw

GOAL! West Ham 0-2 Brighton (Shane Duffy, 58 minutes)

It's two!

Again a corner causes havoc in the West Ham box, and Shane Duffy is waiting at the far post to control and volley in in fine fashion.

Good stuff from the big centre-half.

The second half has begun in the two later kick-offs. 0-0 at St James' Park, 3-3 at the Vitality Stadium.

Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United, 46 minutes

A handball from Victor Lindelof sees the Manchester United defender cautioned by Andre Marriner.

Harry Latham-Coyle2 January 2019 21:04

Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United, 48 minutes

A somewhat muted beginning to the second half. It has been scrappy since the players returned from the interval.

Chelsea 0-0 Southampton, 62 minutes

It remains goalless at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea haven't exactly been banging on the Southampton door.

Maurizio Sarri's side have been lacking in creativity. Half-an-hour to find a goal.

GOAL! West Ham 1-2 Brighton (Marko Arnautovic, 66 minutes)

West Ham get one back!

Marko Arnautovic is, of course, the man to get them back in it.

Harry Latham-Coyle2 January 2019 21:09

Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United, 52 minutes

Mohamed Diame's knock picked up late in the first half has not fully recovered, and he will have to trudge off.

Jonjo Shelvey on in his place.

GOAL! West Ham 2-2 Brighton (Marko Arnautovic, 68 minutes)

Two in two minutes for Marko Arnautovic!

Michail Antonio has had an impact from the bench for West Ham and it is from his cutback that Marko Arnautovic finds the back of the net in fine fashion.

West Ham level, and pushing for all three points at home.

Harry Latham-Coyle2 January 2019 21:12

Newcastle 0-0 Manchester United, 58 minutes

Another left-footed drive from Christian Atsu, this time from slightly further afield, but again it isn't quite good enough, skipping some distance wide of David De Gea's left-hand post.

Atsu has promised much tonight, but, as it has throughout of his career, his final ball and finishing has been lacking.

Harry Latham-Coyle2 January 2019 21:17

GOAL! Huddersfield 1-2 Burnley (Ashley Barnes, 74 minutes)

Burnley with a crucial goal in the relegation six-pointer!

An Ashley Westwood ball bisects a pair of Huddersfield defenders to free Barnes, who makes no mistake, beating Jonas Lossl and sending Burnley into the lead.
