Maurizio Sarri: Callum Hudson-Odoi is Chelsea and England's future

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Both teams will feel they should be doing better this season. Everton have slumped to the bottom half of the table and Marco Silva is under immense pressure as a result.

Jordan Pickford has a shocker at Newcastle United last week as Newcastle turned the game on its head to win. The hosts will need Richarlison to continue providing fire-power if they are to threaten Chelsea on Sunday.

After a difficult start to 2019 Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea have stabilised in recent weeks.

They breezed into the Europa League quarter finals with an 8-0 aggregate win over Dynamo Kiev, and in the league they can go level on points with fourth placed Arsenal with a win on Sunday.

They have multiple routes into next season’s Champions League, but they will want to make sure they are competing on both fronts to increase their chances of qualifying.

When does it start?

Everton vs Chelsea kicks at 16:30 on Sunday 17th March.

Where can I watch it?

The game will be televised on Sky Sports Premier League.

Who's playing?

Everton: Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Mina, Digne, Andre Gomes, Gueye, Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Bernard, Calvert-Lewin.

Subs: Baines, Walcott, Tosun, Schneiderlin, Stekelenburg, Davies, Lookman.

Chelsea: Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Barkley, Pedro, Higuain, Hazard.

Subs: Loftus-Cheek, Caballero, Kovacic, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi, Willian, Christensen.

Player to watch

Callum Hudson-Odoi has seized every opportunity afforded to him this season.

You could hardly blame him for wanting to leave in January, but he has stayed and proved very useful for Sarri despite being just 18 years of age. He scored a goal and gave an assist on Thursday night’s thrashing of Dynamo Kiev. Wil Sarri finally trust him in the Premier League?

Alonso is in the book for a cynical foul on Richarlison, who was about to run at Chelsea's defence. Everton have a free kick in a dangerous position on the right...

Chance! Calvert-Lewin rises highest from Sigurdsson’s inviting ball in but can only power his header over the bar. A brief moment of excitement for the subdued home fans at Goodison Park.

Hazard wins a free kick just outside the Everton box, from which Barkley goes for goal. His effort is blocked by the wall but Chelsea keep the attack alive and work the ball to Pedro. He beats three players and hits a low shot towards the bottom corner, which whistles just wide with Pickford stretching.

Pedro has the ball in the Everton net... but the flag is up. Luiz plays a quick free kick into his path and he finishes well. But he's offside and Everton get away with a defensive lapse.

There'll be two minutes of added time.

Half time: That's it for the first half. Chelsea have been in control and come close to opening the scoring on a couple of occasions. They've been unable to translate their dominance into goals, though, and still have work to do to leave Goodison Park with three points. For Everton fans, there's been very little to shout about in attack.

Here's Jonathan Liew's report from Craven Cottage, where Liverpool edged to a nervy 2-1 win over Fulham earlier today.

Chelsea get us back underway. Can they find a way past Everton's rearguard in the second half?

Everton make a quick start. Calvert-Lewin breaks down the right and curls a dangerous cross towards the far post which Bernard, arriving late, can't quite reach.

This is much better from Everton. They come forward again through Calvert-Lewin, who plays the ball to Bernard. He picks out Gomes and the on-loan Barcelona man hits a fierce shot towards the top corner. Kepa gets across to make a flying save.
