Maurizio Sarri: Callum Hudson-Odoi is Chelsea and England's future

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Both teams will feel they should be doing better this season. Everton have slumped to the bottom half of the table and Marco Silva is under immense pressure as a result.

Jordan Pickford has a shocker at Newcastle United last week as Newcastle turned the game on its head to win. The hosts will need Richarlison to continue providing fire-power if they are to threaten Chelsea on Sunday.

After a difficult start to 2019 Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea have stabilised in recent weeks.

They breezed into the Europa League quarter finals with an 8-0 aggregate win over Dynamo Kiev, and in the league they can go level on points with fourth placed Arsenal with a win on Sunday.

They have multiple routes into next season’s Champions League, but they will want to make sure they are competing on both fronts to increase their chances of qualifying.

When does it start?

Everton vs Chelsea kicks at 16:30 on Sunday 17th March.

Where can I watch it?

The game will be televised on Sky Sports Premier League.

Who's playing?

Everton: Pickford, Coleman, Keane, Mina, Digne, Andre Gomes, Gueye, Richarlison, Sigurdsson, Bernard, Calvert-Lewin.

Subs: Baines, Walcott, Tosun, Schneiderlin, Stekelenburg, Davies, Lookman.

Chelsea: Arrizabalaga, Azpilicueta, Rudiger, Luiz, Alonso, Kante, Jorginho, Barkley, Pedro, Higuain, Hazard.

Subs: Loftus-Cheek, Caballero, Kovacic, Giroud, Hudson-Odoi, Willian, Christensen.

Player to watch

Callum Hudson-Odoi has seized every opportunity afforded to him this season.

You could hardly blame him for wanting to leave in January, but he has stayed and proved very useful for Sarri despite being just 18 years of age. He scored a goal and gave an assist on Thursday night’s thrashing of Dynamo Kiev. Wil Sarri finally trust him in the Premier League?

Full time: That's it! Liverpool return to the top of the Premier League, two points clear of Manchester City, but it wasn't always convincing. They dominated, as expected, for most of the game, although defensive lapses meant this was a much closer game than many anticipated. Three points, regardless of performance, is essential at this stage, though.

For Fulham, it's a seventh straight defeat. They'll be disappointed to have lost again having levelled things in the second half.

Next up: Everton host Chelsea at Goodison Park. Maurizio Sarri's visitors can go level on points with fourth-placed Arsenal with victory today, and will be looking to get back to winning ways after their 1-1 draw with Wolves last weekend.

Everton, meanwhile, are about as midtable as it is possible to be. It's been an underwhelming season for the Toffees, but a win here would put them back in contention for a top half finish.

Ross Barkley returns to Goodison Park with Chelsea this afternoon. He'll be hopeful of making an impact from midfield, but he's unlikely to get a warm reception from the home fans.

Everton get us underway at Goodison Park!

It's been a slow start from both sides. Chelsea are content to knock the ball around patiently and build things from the back, but there's been no chances of note for either team yet. Barkley, when he has been on the ball, has been roundly booed by the home fans.

Chelsea create their first chance of the game. Alonso, with space on the left, plays the ball through for Hazard, who cuts onto his right foot and draws a low save from Pickford. A warning sign for Everton, who can't afford to give the diminutive Belgian that much time to pick his spot.

Hazard goes close again! It's almost a carbon copy of his previous opportunity. He cuts inside from the left and curls a shot towards the far corner, which rattles off the post.

And moments after Hazard's effort, Higuain finds himself in on goal. His first touch takes him away from his marker and allows him to prod the ball past Pickford. Everton's goalkeeper just about gets enough on it to take the pace off the shot and the Toffees clear. It's been a shaky start from the hosts.
