Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Follow the latest updates from the Premier League live as Manchester City travel to Bournemouth.

Pep Guardiola’s resources are depleted with Fernandinho and Aymeric Laporte both out injured, while Sergio Aguero has complained of exhaustion, but Gabriel Jesus and John Stones are both back and fully fit.

Bournemouth are struggling for form after such an impressive first half of the season, so a shock win against the champions would be a timely boost. Follow it live:

Bournemouth 0-0 Manchester City, 20 minutes

It remains goalless at the Vitality Stadium, but David Silva should have put the visitors ahead after strong work from Kevin De Bruyne.

The Belgian's cut back found Silva in space, but his crisply struck side-foot flew the wrong side of the post.

GOAL! Manchester United 0-1 Southampton (Yan Valery, 26 minutes)

What! A! GOAL!

Young right-back Yan Valery has plenty of football ahead of him, but he'll score few better than that.

Valery unfurls a 25-yard drive from the right of the box, hit so cleanly, fading away from David de Gea's palms and flicking off the Spaniard's fingertips into the near top corner.

Sensational hit, and Southampton lead.

Bournemouth 0-0 Manchester City, 30 minutes

Bournemouth doing a good job so far in frustrating Manchester City, who endured a similar game in midweek, requiring a penalty to beat West Ham.

Manchester United 0-1 Southampton, 31 minutes

Good buildup from the home side as they look to get back on level terms, former Southampton man Luke Shaw whizzing a cross through the box but not finding a teammate in red.

Why don't you come on over, Valery? The young Frenchman has put Southampton ahead at Old Trafford in quite fantastic fashion.

Manchester United 0-1 Southampton, 36 minutes

A third big chance for Romelu Lukaku, a third big miss.

This time Angus Gunn is not required as the Belgian meets Andreas Pereira's excellent ball in with his head, directing it off target.

Manchester United 0-1 Southampton, 41 minutes

Another chance for Manchester United, Chris Smalling heading across goal, the spin of the ball always just taking it wide.

Marcus Rashford manages to retrieve and hook back across but Southampton just about clear.

Manchester United 0-1 Southampton, 42 minutes

Ryan Bertrand again appears to be fouled in the box, Ashley Young all over the Southampton left wing-back as Bertrand surges onto a bouncing ball.

The referee again ignores the visiting's side's appeals, who will feel hard done by.
