From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Arsenal will be looking to record their first points of the new season when they face Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners have endured a miserable start to the season which has seen them lose to champions Manchester City and FA Cup holders Chelsea in successive weeks.

However, Unai Emery will be confident of picking up his first point as his side faces only one of three sides that have fared worse than the Gunners this season.

The Hammers were thoroughly dismantled 4-0 by Liverpool on the opening weekend before they imploded at home to Bournemouth to lose 2-1.

Both teams are still adapting to new styles of play and incorporating their summer additions into their starting XIs, with Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi and West Ham’s Felipe Anderson among the best performers for either side so far.

It’s a big game for…

Unai Emery: The Basque has received notable support this week from Ray Parlour and Gary Neville regarding his man-management and tactical nous, however his methods must soon start to bear fruit and his side must shows more defensive resilience than was on display at Stamford Bridge. His side may not get a better chance to do so than against a faltering Hammers outfit.

Stat…

139: Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi has had the most touches of any Arsenal player this season, which after 180 minutes stands at 139.

Remember when…

Unai Emery will hope to avoid a third consecutive defeat in the league, but the Hammers did inflict a third defeat in a row on the Gunners in April 2007 thanks to this lob over Jens Lehmann from Bobby Zamora at Emirates Stadium. The loss left Arsenal just two points ahead of Bolton Wanderers in the race for the final Champions League place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npWlimLX_z8

Player to watch…

Matteo Guendouzi : The 19-year-old has been the standout player in the new season and has made a combined 17 tackles and interceptions for the Gunners this term, more than any other midfielder in the league. With a 100% pass success rate in the first half against Chelsea, including a defence-splitting pass to Hector Bellerin, the former Lorient man will look to continue being the side’s metronome in midfield.

Past three-meetings…

Arsenal 4 (Monreal, Ramsey, Lacazette x2) West Ham 1 (Arnautovic), Premier League, April 2018

Arsenal 1 (Welbeck) West Ham 0, League Cup, December 2017

West Ham 0 Arsenal 0, Premier League, December 2017

Couple of changes around the grounds.

At Huddersfield, Laurent Depoitre replaces Steve Mounie, and at the Vitality there is another striking change, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin replacing Cenk Tosun

Premier League history created on this mad Saturday afternoon..

88 min: Southampton 1-1 Leicester

Change for Leicester. Goalscorer Demarai Gray is replaced by Shinji Okazaki.

Vithushan Ehantharajah25 August 2018 16:47

83 min: Arsenal 2-1 West Ham

Couple of chances at the Emirates. Fabianski does well to divert Ramsey's drive away from goal. Felipe Anderson breaks from the resulting corner, and he sends it to Lucas Perez but his cross is too heavy for Chicharito.

GOAL! Southampton 1-2 Leicester (Maguire 90+2)

Not the towering header you expect, but what a goal this is from the England centre-back. He smashes a shot past McCarthy from 25 yards and surely secures the three points for the visitors.

Not a good day for the Frenchman if it turns out to be the winner.

Vithushan Ehantharajah25 August 2018 16:50

GOAL! Arsenal 3-1 West Ham (Welbeck)

That wraps it up for Arsenal and a first win for Unai Emery.

The England man smashes home from 10 yards after a pass from Hector Bellerin.

FULL TIME: Southampton 1-2 Leicester

So Harry Maguire's effort in added time crushes Saints' hearts as they fall to defeat.

Ryan Bertrand had scored a stunner to open the scoring before Demarai Gray's equaliser.

Pierre Emile-Hojberg saw red, and with the game seemingly heading for a draw, the England man snatched the points late, late on.

Vithushan Ehantharajah25 August 2018 16:56

FULL TIME: Arsenal 3-1 West Ham

Unai Emery finally has his first points of the season, albeit in nervy circumstances.

The Hammers, who remain pointless, took the lead through Marko Arnautovic's drive.

Nacho Monreal dug the Gunenrs out of a hole once again to equalise.

A cagey affair for the most part, a scarppy own goal from Issa Diop saw Arsenal turn the game on its head.

West Ham had several chances to equalise, but Welbeck's injury-time strike secured the points for Emery,

Vithushan Ehantharajah25 August 2018 17:00

FULL TIME: Huddersfield 0-0 Cardiff

A point for each side at the John Smith's Stadium, and the hosts would probably be quite satisfied with that after Hogg's dismissal and Cardiff's late chances.
