Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Arsenal will be looking to record their first points of the new season when they face Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners have endured a miserable start to the season which has seen them lose to champions Manchester City and FA Cup holders Chelsea in successive weeks.

However, Unai Emery will be confident of picking up his first point as his side faces only one of three sides that have fared worse than the Gunners this season.

The Hammers were thoroughly dismantled 4-0 by Liverpool on the opening weekend before they imploded at home to Bournemouth to lose 2-1.

Both teams are still adapting to new styles of play and incorporating their summer additions into their starting XIs, with Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi and West Ham’s Felipe Anderson among the best performers for either side so far.

It’s a big game for…

Unai Emery: The Basque has received notable support this week from Ray Parlour and Gary Neville regarding his man-management and tactical nous, however his methods must soon start to bear fruit and his side must shows more defensive resilience than was on display at Stamford Bridge. His side may not get a better chance to do so than against a faltering Hammers outfit.

Stat…

139: Arsenal’s Matteo Guendouzi has had the most touches of any Arsenal player this season, which after 180 minutes stands at 139.

Remember when…

Unai Emery will hope to avoid a third consecutive defeat in the league, but the Hammers did inflict a third defeat in a row on the Gunners in April 2007 thanks to this lob over Jens Lehmann from Bobby Zamora at Emirates Stadium. The loss left Arsenal just two points ahead of Bolton Wanderers in the race for the final Champions League place. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npWlimLX_z8

Player to watch…

Matteo Guendouzi : The 19-year-old has been the standout player in the new season and has made a combined 17 tackles and interceptions for the Gunners this term, more than any other midfielder in the league. With a 100% pass success rate in the first half against Chelsea, including a defence-splitting pass to Hector Bellerin, the former Lorient man will look to continue being the side’s metronome in midfield.

Past three-meetings…

Arsenal 4 (Monreal, Ramsey, Lacazette x2) West Ham 1 (Arnautovic), Premier League, April 2018

Arsenal 1 (Welbeck) West Ham 0, League Cup, December 2017

West Ham 0 Arsenal 0, Premier League, December 2017

Odds…

West Ham to win: 7/1

Draw: 21/5

(Odds provided by 888 Sport)

41 min: Arsenal 1-1 West Ham

A poor challenge from Issa Diop sees him enter the referee's book, bringing down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan can only hit the wall with the resulting free-kick.

45 min: Southampton 0-0 Leicester

The Saints were on top for large parts of the first half, but there was little in terms of chances from either side.

An improved performance from both sides is required for what has been a damp squib so far.

Not pleasant reading for Eveton fans!

45 min: Bournemouth 0-0 Everton

For the second time this season, Everton are down to ten men after Phil Jagielka saw red at Molineux.

Richarlison's red card was the main talking point from a rather dour 45 minutes at the Vitality Stadium, but Everton will be encouraged by what they have done in wide areas.

45 min: Arsenal 1-1 West Ham

The only Premier League game with goals from the 3pm kick-offs, and we could have had more.

Marko Arnautovic scored one, and had the ball in the net for another but for the offside flag. The Austrian also had a huge part in the other big chance but Snodgrass did not have his shooting boots on.

Arsenal have looked shaky at the back but it was defender Nacho Monreal who has put them level. An intriguing second half awaits...

45 min: Huddersfield 0-0 Cardiff

By no means a classic at the John Smith's Stadium, but the injuries to Ben Hamer and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing will be the most worrying aspect for both sides at the break.

Poignant point, if ever there was one.....

For those of you who decided to put Richarlison in your fantasy team and need a bit of a pick-me-up, remember that the Saturday action does not stop with the 3pm games.

Liverpool vs Brighton awaits at 5:30pm, and the Reds will be sniffing blood after Manchester City's draw at Molineux in the day's early kick-off.

46 min: Southampton 0-0 Leicester

We're back underway at St Mary's. Let's hope for a more entertaining half!

Vithushan Ehantharajah25 August 2018 16:04

46 min: Bournemouth 0-0 Everton

Back underway at the Vitality as well.
