United went into the match hot off the heels of Wednesday's incredible Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain, but were unable to maintain both that feel-good factor and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's unbeaten record as United manager in the Premier League.
Instead, it was Arsenal who took the game by the scruff of the neck and a bizarre goal opened up the scoring when Granit Xhaka's long-range effort caught out David De Gea, with the United goalkeeper completely mis-reading the shot and letting in without getting close to the ball. As United pressed for an equaliser, Romelu Lukaku was guilty of missing a number of chances, before Fred was judged to have fouled Alexandre Lacazette and a penalty was awarded to the hosts, which Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang calmly tucked away to secure the victory.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Manchester United (Xhaka 12')
That's not the best from De Gea it must be said.
There's some serious zazz on the long-range effort from Xhaka, and the swerve does for the Spaniard, who will be disappointed despite the movement.
Advantage Arsenal.

What a start to this game!

Aaron Ramsey definitely has a more defensive role today, but that won't stop his late runs into the box on evidence.
The Welshman darts into the box to meet Maitland Niles' low cross, but it is a little behind him and all he can do is dig it over the bar.
27 min: Arsenal 1-0 Manchester United
Nothing is too ambitious for Pogba these days, and he tries to beat Leno from about 35 yards but the German sees it all the way.
30 min : Arsenal 1-0 Manchester United
Marcus Rashford is straight over to John Moss here appealing for something after Sokratis gets a last-ditch challenge in on the forward.
United look threatening every time they go forward, with Lukaku, who played the ball in for Rashford, at most of the good work.
33 min: Arsenal 1-0 Manchester United
Diogo Dalot, whose shot caused the penalty on Wednesday night, tries to get involved here after Shaw's poor free-kick is cleared to him, but he curls well over.
