Forest lost their appeal to the Premier League to add Steve Cook to their 25-man squad following a spate of defensive injuries, which leaves Joe Worrall and Felipe as their only fit central defenders. Felipe and Jonjo Shelvey made their full and home debuts.

The first half was quiet for the most part as Man City dictated the game, while Forest were forced to sit deep in their own half due to the visitors' dominance. Rodri and Grealish had good chances to open the scoring but could not prevail against the Forest defenders. Silva then produced a moment of brilliance in the 41st minute as his thunderous strike from 20 yards out left Navas helpless as the Blues go into the break with a 1-0 lead.
