Newcastle vs Man City LIVE: Premier League result and final score as six-goal thriller ends level
Newcastle 3-3 Manchester City: Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva rescued a draw after the hosts stormed into a two-goal lead
Manchester City and Newcastle shared the points as a sensational and dramatic six-goal thriller in the Premier League ended level at St James’ Park.
Ilkay Gundogan fired the champions ahead after just five minutes and City looked set for a comfortable afternoon when the German midfielder struck from close range.
But Newcastle produced a brilliant response, and deservedly led at half time as Miguel Almiron bundled in an equaliser and Callum Wilson finished off a breakaway.
Erling Haaland hit the post after half-time and moments later Kieran Trippier’s stunning free kick beat Ederson to leave St James’ Park rocking and City in deep trouble.
But Pep Guardiola’s side launched a comeback of their own - as Haaland pulled one back and then Bernardo Silva finished a remarkable Kevin De Bruyne through ball.
In a further twist, Kieran Trippier saw a red card for a high challenge on De Bruyne overturned by VAR, and City could not find a winner.
RED CARD! 73’ - Newcastle 3-3 Man City
Straight red for Trippier! De Bruyne goes flying past him across the halfway line and the Newcastle man lunges in with the only intention being to take out his man - not a ridiculously forceful one, but certainly a high boot across his knee. It’s a correct call surely for a lack of intention to play the ball?
VAR ask the ref to go and check...
72’ - Newcastle 3-3 Man City
Saint-Maximin and Joelinton have been excellent today and they link up once more down the left. This is surely the toughest game Kyle Walker has had in a long time.
The eventual cut-back doesn’t quite reach its intended target and City eventually have the ball back. Another Saint-Maximin dribble ends in a shot but it’s wide this time.
Neither of these sides had conceded before today, it’s six between them now.
68’ - Newcastle 3-3 Man City
Double change for the Magpies. Chris Wood on for Wilson, Willock replaced by Sean Longstaff.
We’re heading into the final 20 or so and the in-game momentum is certainly with the visitors now. Will Eddie Howe’s changes be able to stem the tide?
GOAL! 64’ - Newcastle 3-3 Man City
Brilliant from Pope first time, nothing he can do about the second one. Haaland is head down and sprints between two defenders and is one on one, but Pope races out to block him.
A minute later though De Bruyne’s threaded pass finds Bernardo Silva running free behind the defence and although Pope is out quickly, the Portuguese attacker just rolls it past him. What an assist though! We are all square, 3-3.
GOAL! 60’ - Newcastle 3-2 Man City
Haaland heads at goal from a corner and Pope palms it out, Gundogan is unable to get a clean shot away but it’s worked back in again and this time the ball bounces back to Haaland’s left foot - which unleashes a cannon. From five yards out, nobody is stopping that one and it’s 3-2!
58’ - Newcastle 3-1 Man City
City look lost in how to deal with Saint-Maximin in particular. He’s unstoppable in this form to be fair, unless you take the Stones approach - which also didn’t work out too well in the end.
Schar at the other end stretches to clear a low cross and just has a bit of a feel of his hamstring afterwards.
GOAL! 54’ - Newcastle 3-1 Man City
...and the right-back bends an absolute beauty into the top corner!
Ederson goes flying across his goal and gets nowhere near it, having taken a step to the wrong side beforehand. Even so that was a peach from Trippier, whipped across goal and into the corner. That’s 3-1 to Newcastle!
53’ - Newcastle 2-1 Man City
Relentless action again. Haaland skips past two challenges and absolutely belts a strike in right-footed - fantastic fingertip save by Pope onto post. Straight up the other end Saint-Maximin blazes past two tackles himself and is only halted by a ridiculously crude Stones lunge which is never getting near the ball. Yellow card, free kick...Trippier to take...
50’ - Newcastle 2-1 Man City
Rodri bundles Guimaraes over, just after Walker is pulled up for a foul on Saint-Maximin. City remain rattled by the Newcastle approach being aggressive and fast-paced. Guimaraes then closes down Rodri, makes another good tackle but takes a bit of a boot to the knee in the process. Sore one.
