Liverpool pulled off a remarkable comeback at St. James’ Park to defeat Newcastle with 10-men in their Premier League clash on Sunday evening.

A scratchy start from Trent Alexander-Arnold could have seen the right-back sent off after he picked up a yellow card before fouling Anthony Gordon. Gordon made him pay though by picking his pocket and beating Alisson to send Newcastle ahead in the first half.

Minutes later, Virgil Van Dijk brought down Alexander Isak when he was through on goal and the Liverpool captain was dismissed through a straight red card. The visitors dug in deep to reach half-time before Jurgen Klopp made changes.

Diogo Jota and Harvey Elliott brought Liverpool some much needed control but it was Darwin Nunez who came off the bench to first equalise then score a stoppage time winner to complete a fantastic comeback for Liverpool.

Relive the action from St. James’ Park as Newcastle were beaten by Liverpool:

Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

19 mins: Liverpool work the ball from their end of the pitch up to Newcastle’s and play Luis Diaz in on goal from a tight angle on the left. He shoots and forces a low stop out of Nick Pope who turns the ball wide of the target.

The resultant corner is lifted into the middle but Newcastle defend it without too much trouble.

Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

16 mins: Sandro Tonali takes on Andy Robertson and flicks the ball past the Liverpool left-back. The cross comes into the box but Virgil van Dijk is on hand to clear the lines.

Newcastle waste no time is setting up the next attack. Anthony Gordon feeds the ball up to Alexander Isak who turns it over to Joelinton on the left side of the penalty area.

Shot! Joelinton opens up his body and shoots but curls the effort straight into the hands of Alisson.

Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

13 mins: Newcastle are awarded a free kick just inside Liverpool’s half. They send men forward as Kieran Trippier floats the ball over towards Dan Burn.

It drops to Luis Diaz who belts it away and earns the Reds a throw in deep in their own half.

Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

10 mins: That Trent Alexander-Arnold incident has lit a fire inside St. James’ Park. It’s a hostile atmosphere at the best of times but with the fans thinking they’ve been hard done by this is going to be a long afternoon for Liverpool’s vice-captain.

Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

8 mins: Oh my. Trent Alexander-Arnold is bundled to the ground and out of play before throwing the ball away in disgust which earns him a yellow car.

The Liverpool defender then seemingly yanks back Anthony Gordon as he looks to bomb it down the left wing on the counter-attack.

Eddie Howe, Kieran Trippier and the majority of St. James’ Park think that foul is a yellow card offence - it probably is - but the referee decides not to send off the right back.

He’s on shaky ground now.

Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

6 mins: Sandro Tonali is slipped the ball by Kieran Trippier on the right side of the pitch for Newcastle. He flicks it around Alexis Mac Allister before hitting a hopeful pass down the line.

Alexander Isak is the furthest man forward but decides he’s not going to win the race and leaves it for Virgil van Dijk.

Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

3 mins: Mo Salah drifts into a central position as the ball is chipped forward by Liverpool. It’s nodded over to Luis Diaz who looks to thread the ball through to Salah.

The pass is decent but Sven Botman reads the ball and intercepts the ball before it reaches Liverpool’s talisman.

Kick off! Newcastle 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool get the match underway and knock the ball to Joel Matip. The Reds recover the ball in midfield and slip Dominik Szoboszlai into the right side of the box.

He takes on Sven Botman and wins an early corner.

Gareth Southgate is watching on from the stands. There’s an international break coming up so the England boss will be hoping to get a good look at some of the hopefuls this afternoon.

Newcastle vs Liverpool

Here come the players.

It’s been eight years since Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have lost a match against Newcastle but the hosts are a totally different team under Eddie Howe.

This should be a cracker. Kick off is up next...

Newcastle vs Liverpool

Mo Salah has scored or assisted in each of Liverpool’s last eight league matches while Luis Diaz could become only the fourth player to score in the Reds’ first three Premier League matches of a season after Robbie Fowler in 1994/95, Daniel Sturridge in 2013/14 and Sadio Mane in 2017/18.
