Newcastle United struck twice in three first-half minutes to beat Chelsea and advance to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. This was the second meeting between the clubs in just a few days and the hosts gained a measure of revenge for their Premier League defeat.

While visiting boss Enzo Maresca opted for heavy rotation, Eddie Howe named a strong Newcastle side, and was rewarded with a strong performance. Alexander Isak first capitalised on an error in possession from Chelsea deep in their own half, before Axel Disasi clumsily turned through his own net after his teammates fell asleep to let Isak latch on to a quickly-taken free kick.

It continues Newcastle’s pursuit of their first major domestic silverware since 1955, while Maresca’s alternative goals were perhaps illustrated by his decision to use just a single substitution, with Cole Palmer among those left on the bench. The host go into the hat for the quarter-finals.

Newcastle 0-0 Chelsea, 21 minutes

Vibrant play from Joao Felix, chopping in and then out to bamboozle a pair of retreating defenders and eventually thrash a shot between them. There’s too much oomph in the effort but Felix’s flashing feet look in good working order.

And now Sean Longstaff follows Schar in having his name scribbled down, out of control as he clatters Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. The midfielder is 27 today - not the card he’d have wanted to have received.

There’s a good battle brewing between Joelinton and Axel Disasi on that side, two tall and powerful individuals having a couple of early entertaining duels.

At the other end, Fabian Schar is slightly late on a rampaging Christopher Nkunku as the Chelsea forward makes rapid advancement down the right. Into the book the Newcastle captain goes.

It looks like Joao Felix is playing as Chelsea’s number ten just in behind Christopher Nkunku, with Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Mudryk offering the width on either side. Joelinton is in Newcastle’s front three rather than the midfield role in which we’ve more commonly seen him in the last couple of seasons.

Enzo Fernandez’s attempt to switch play goes awry, the lofted pass misplaced and misjudged and leaving Mykhailo Mudryk with much too much to do.

Almost an opener! Renato Veiga arrives on to Marc Cucurella’s beautiful cut-back, and only Sandro Tonali’s jutting leg prevents the Chelsea midfielder from finding the net. Even with the flick of the Italian’s leg, it’s not far wide with Nick Pope well beaten.

More authoritative from Jorgensen, making a strong decision to come out and deny Anthony Gordon a chance to use his pace to get to a lump over the top.

Mykhailo Mudryk gives the ball away softly in his first moment of possession of the match.

A slightly nervy moment for Filip Jorgensen, the Chelsea goalkeeper coming a long way to try and claim Lewis Hall’s outswinging free kick and failing to collect cleanly. Joelinton can’t quite stab the loose ball goalwards.

Off the woodwork! Joelinton wraps himself around the post in disbelief having thundered into the box to get on the end of a lovely low cross from Alexander Isak and seemingly provided the scoring touch. But his side footed effort clips the outside of the upright!

The first chance, though, falls to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, slipped in by Christopher Nkunku but unable to direct his shot wide of Nick Pope, who gathers between his legs. An excellent early sighting for the former Leicester man.
