24 mins: The first warning sign for Newcastle. Milan surge forward, Leao cuts in from the left and tries to curl the ball beyond Dubravka into the far corner but it’s just wide. Trippier needed to be more alert there.

21 mins: A HUGE CHANCE FOR NEWCASTLE! But what a tackle by Tomori!

It all comes from Trippier down the right again, he feeds Joelinton who flicks the ball past Maignan and across the face of goal. It’s about to be tapped in by Almiron from two yards out, only for Tomori to slide from behind him, hook his foot round and tackle the ball away for a corner. It’s spectacular by the English centre-back and saves a certain goal.

Perhaps Almiron didn’t realise how close behind him Tomori was and expected a drama-free tap-in but it’s superb defending.

19 mins: The Milan back four of Calabria, Tomori, Hernandez and Florenzi have looked solid so far, soaking up the Newcastle pressure. The Magpies continuing to patiently probe though.

Fabian Schar’s eyes light up as he receives the ball 30 yards from goal and he attempts a piledriver but it’s always raising and comfortably over the bar.

15 mins: Joelinton twisting and turning in the box but can’t get the ball out of his feet to get a clean shot away. Then it’s great defending by Theo Hernandez who pinches the ball away from Callum Wilson on the edge of the box when the situation looks dangerous.

Newcastle have had the better of this opening 15 minutes but not scored the goal, or really even created a clear-cut chance, to give them the lead they need

13 mins: Rafael Leao counters for AC Milan and does well to find Christian Pulisic despite being surrounded by black and white shirts. No composure from the former Chelsea man though as he slices his shot well wide of the bear post.

11 mins: Almiron clattered in midfield to give Newcastle a free-kick but Trippier’s pass is errant to give away possession.

Gordon then finds space from Almiron’s pass on the left and tees up Joelinton whose shot is deflected harmlessly away from goal and Maignan does well to prevent a corner by booting the ball into touch

8 mins: All Newcastle in the early going - they’ve set up camp in the Milan half so far in a lively start. Trippier especially finding lots of space out on the right - could be a long night for Milan left-back Florenzi.

5 mins: Christian Pulisic gives away a free-kick for a foul on Anthony Gordon about 30 yards out, fairly central.

Trippier strikes it! Over the wall and dipping but over the bar. Not too far away - decent strike.
