Gary Lineker shocks Euros viewers with crude Ronaldo joke

Netherlands beat Turkey in a thrilling quarter-final at Euro 2024 on Saturday, setting up a semi-final with England next week.

Underdogs Turkey always looked dangerous on the break, but they took the lead through a set piece, with Samet Akaydin netting a header in the first half.

The Dutch looked in danger, but Ronald Koeman’s side hit back with 20 minutes left in normal time, as Stefan de Vrij scored his own header to draw his nation level. And then six minutes later, Cody Gakpo forced an own goal from Mert Muldur, catching the Turkish defender out with a back-post run.

That strike proved the difference in Berlin, as Netherlands booked their spot in the final four, where England await on Wednesday.

Re-live all action and follow the post-game fallout below, as Netherlands beat Turkey at Euro 2024.

Bukayo Saka shows England a new way to stand two games from Euro 2024 glory

It isn’t always convincing, it is often confusing, but the results are as clear as Bukayo Saka’s shot: England are in Gareth Southgate’s third major semi-final after a shootout victory over Switzerland. They are now two games from glory, even if the football doesn’t always evoke that feeling. That won’t matter to the team and it often doesn’t matter to a tournament. England have found a way. Through that, Gareth Southgate may have found a team. The introduction of Luke Shaw may end up as influential as anything else in this tournament, with a game that required others to make the difference.

Above all was Saka, who rescued England with a piece of individual brilliance, and then continued to bury the memory of Euro 2020 with another supreme penalty. Next was Jordan Pickford, who made the fateful save from Manuel Akanji. That ended up being all that was required, as all of Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnoldslotted home with minimum fuss, and maximum precision.

That was more than could have been said for the game itself.

Wout Weghorst changes the game to send Netherlands past Turkey to Euro 2024 semi-final with England

For the second time in two days, the home team went out of Euro 2024. If Germany are the hosts, the Turkish diaspora had made Berlin feel as if it stood on the banks of the Bosphorus. They were little more than 20 minutes from a semi-final in Dortmund which, given the Ruhr’s vast Turkish population, could have seemed another home game.

But then came the Dutch comeback. The Netherlands eliminated the West German hosts in Euro ’88. They silenced the Turkish locals in Euro 2024. Two goals in seven minutes set up a showdown with England and takes Ronald Koeman closer to the double of winning the European Championship as player and manager.

FULL-TIME! Netherlands 2-1 Turkey

A great performance from some of the Dutch side, with Gakpo, Simons and Depay playing well and Weghorst causing chaos after coming on.

The tie against England is a blockbuster one – the two sides last met at a major competition at Euro ‘96, when England won 4-1 in one of their most famous major results.

FULL-TIME! Netherlands 2-1 Turkey

What ended up being an enthralling game has finished with the Netherlands winning 2-1 and booking a place in the semi-final!

The Dutch were dominated by Turkey at times, but in the second half they piled on the pressure and it told with de Vrij’s equaliser.

Six minutes later, the pressure told once more as Gakpo bundled home to book their date in Dortmund on 9 July.

Turkey deserved more from the game after great performances from Guler, Yilmaz and Kadioglu especially. They’ve been great value across the tournament.

The Netherlands give away a cheap free-kick from Verbruggen’s clearance. Will there be one more chance for Turkey?

There are plenty of cards being given out to people on the bench.
