Euro 2024 Group D reached its conclusion on Tuesday evening as Austria powered past the Netherlands in an enthralling encounter in Berlin.

Ralf Rangnick’s side grabbed an early lead after Donyell Malen turned a cross into his own net, and they dominated much of the first 45 as the Netherlands wasted a couple of chances to equalise.

The second half began in the opposite manner, with Cody Gakpo curling an equaliser past Pentz within five minutes of the restart. The Dutch began to impose themselves on the match, but they were behind again before they knew it as Romano Schmid guided a header past Verbruggen.

With both teams pressing to gain an advantage, the Netherlands were briefly back into it after Depay poked an effort past Pentz, but their parity was once more short-lived. Baumgartner threaded in a pass to Sabitzer, who broke through and rifled an effort into the roof of the Dutch net.

The Netherlands pushed for an equaliser as full-time loomed but Austria held firm to take three points in the German capital, and with them first place in Group D.

Follow all the reaction from Netherlands v Austria below.

HALF-TIME: Netherlands 0-1 Austria

An intriguing first 45 in Berlin. The game was played at quite a pedestrian pace at times, with both sides missing big chances and providing a flurry of quality in moments.

As ti stands, Austria are heading through at the top of Group D! France would be second and the Netherlands in third, meaning that England could well face the Dutch if they were to win Group C tonight.

Austria are happy to keep the ball patiently as the half comes to an end.

They’re waiting for a chance to pounce, but it never comes as the ball ends up back with Pentz.

Good work from Malen down the right as he holds the ball up before skipping past the challenge and cutting it back to Schoeten. The initial shot is blocked and the attack ends moments later as Depay was offside as he tried to run through on goal.

It looks like Ronald Koeman has just had enough of the Netherlands performance up to now. It doesn’t seem like Veerman is injured at all.

Austria win a corner after good work from Arnautovic, and Sabitzer’s shot from range is saved. It bounces back out and Austria chip it back into the Netherlands box – it bounces into the path of Arnautovic, who simply needs to guide it past Verbruggen, but the Dutch ‘keeper saves the initial effort before tangling with Arnautovic and eventually palming the ball away!

Now Patrick Wimmer goes into the book as he catches Geertruida late. Veerman swings it in and it bounces out to Reijnders, who fires a shot well wide.

Ronald Koeman makes a change as Veerman is replaced by Xavi Simons, and there’s a brief water break too.
