Who will be Manchester United's new manager?

Michael Carrick’s first game in charge of Manchester United saw the caretaker boss lead the club into the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night, his players securing a 2-0 win at Villarreal.

Former United midfielder Carrick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the dugout following the Norwegian’s sacking on Sunday, and the team’s performance here was similar to many showings under their now-ex-coach; United were disjointed for much of the game, before Cristiano Ronaldo did what he has done so many times this season by scoring late on to break the deadlock. Jadon Sancho then netted his first goal in a United shirt in the final minute, sealing the victory and securing the Red Devils a spot in the knockout stages of the competition.

It is unclear how long Carrick will be in charge of United, with reports suggesting that the club’s hierarchy could appoint a different interim coach until the end of the season before seeking a permanent successor to Solskjaer. Mauricio Pochettino has been linked to United, with our own Melissa Reddy reporting that the PSG boss could leave his current side to move to Old Trafford before next summer. However, Pochettino insisted on Tuesday evening that he is “so happy” in Paris. Follow all the fallout from United’s win against Villarreal.

Villarreal 0 - 0 Man Utd

30 mins: Close! Man Utd string together a series of passes and work the ball up the right side to Jadon Sancho. He injects a touch of pace to get alongside the box before swinging a decent cross into the six-yard area. Ronaldo is waiting once again but he’s beaten to the ball by Raul Albiol who heads it behind for a United corner.

27 mins: McTominay almost plays Martial in behind with a cross field diagonal ball but overhits the pass and Martial isn’t able to keep it in play after a poor first touch.

Save! A long ball from Geronimo Rulli drops for Pino who shakes off Telles and gets into the right side of United’s box. He cuts the ball back to Trigueros who shoots and draws De Gea into a sharp one-handed save low to his right!

24 mins: Manchester United haven’t clicked yet going forward. Martial drops deeper to receive the ball and sends it up to Ronaldo. There’s a ton of space on the right wing and Ronaldo puts the ball there expecting a run from Van de Beek who just holds his position in midfield.

Estupinan collects the loose ball and once again Villarreal have possession.

21 mins: The corner comes out to Estupinan and some solid defensive work from Fred forces him away from the Manchester United box. The ball comes out to Pino on the right side and his cross into the penalty area is sent straight out of play.

McTominay threads a decent pass up to Ronaldo who shifts the ball away from Juan Foyth and seemingly draws the defender into a foul. Ronaldo goes down after the contact but the referee lets play go on and Villarreal take over possession much to the annoyance of Ronaldo.

Villarreal 0 - 0 Man Utd

18 mins: A mini break from Cristiano Ronaldo comes to nothing for the visitors as Manchester United don’t commit many men up the pitch. Villarreal work the ball smartly around the back before sending it through the lines of the Man Utd midfield and out to Estupinan on the left wing. He flies forward and wins a corner for the home side.

15 mins: Villarreal win a free kick in the middle of the pitch as the ball bounces off Scott McTominay’s hand. There seems to be a more conscious effort from Manchester United to hold their defensive shape but that means they’ve dropped deeper as a unit. Apart from the first couple of minutes Villarreal have seen all the possession so far.

12 mins: There’s a penalty area for a possible handball against Wan-Bissaka but his arms were by his side and a VAR check comes to nothing. Villarreal are instead awarded a corner and Victor Lindelof deals with it at the back post.

The ball comes out to Estupinan who shifts it around Fred and curls another cross into the box. Pau Torres has stayed in the area and he wins the header but sends the ball over the crossbar!

9 mins: Chance! Manchester United started well enough but Villarreal have since taken control of the ball. Manu Trigueros flicks the ball out to Gomez on the left wing and he fires a low cross into the box that Harry Maguire deals with. It’s not fully cleared by United though and Villarreal attack again with a pass across the box to Pina. Telles lets it run and the winger takes a snapshot from the right-hand side firing his effort into the side-netting of De Gea’s goal!

6 mins: Save! David De Gea is called into action early on as McTominay gives the ball away to Pino who sends it across the pitch towards Moi Gomez. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is drawn wide by a run off the ball from Pervis Estupinan so Gomez cuts back onto his right foot. He shoots from just outside the box and forces De Gea into a leaping save to his left!

4 mins: Chance! Telles takes the free kick and swings the ball into the middle of the box. Ronaldo is waiting to receive the ball but Raul Albiol gets a touch and flicks the ball to the back post. Scott McTominay is there and he heads the ball into the side-netting. Good delivery from Telles to creat an early chance for United to score.
