Who will be Manchester United's new manager?

Michael Carrick’s first game in charge of Manchester United saw the caretaker boss lead the club into the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday night, his players securing a 2-0 win at Villarreal.

Former United midfielder Carrick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the dugout following the Norwegian’s sacking on Sunday, and the team’s performance here was similar to many showings under their now-ex-coach; United were disjointed for much of the game, before Cristiano Ronaldo did what he has done so many times this season by scoring late on to break the deadlock. Jadon Sancho then netted his first goal in a United shirt in the final minute, sealing the victory and securing the Red Devils a spot in the knockout stages of the competition.

It is unclear how long Carrick will be in charge of United, with reports suggesting that the club’s hierarchy could appoint a different interim coach until the end of the season before seeking a permanent successor to Solskjaer. Mauricio Pochettino has been linked to United, with our own Melissa Reddy reporting that the PSG boss could leave his current side to move to Old Trafford before next summer. However, Pochettino insisted on Tuesday evening that he is “so happy” in Paris. Follow all the fallout from United’s win against Villarreal.

Chelsea 1 - 0 Juventus

42 mins: There are cries of ‘shoot’ when the ball comes to Reece James but instead he sends a pass into the six-yard box that De Ligt has to put behind for another corner. This one comes to Thiago Silva but the ball glances off his head and bounces out of the box.

Chelsea 1 - 0 Juventus

39 mins: Worrying signs if you’re a Chelsea fan as N’Golo Kante has been taken off by Thomas Tuchel with Ruben Loftus-Cheek replacing him. On the face of it the move seems to be a precationary measure as Kante doesn’t look overly hurt. He may have tweaked something though.

Chelsea 1 - 0 Juventus

37 mins: Save! Lovely stuff from Chelsea who look devastating when they win the ball high up the pitch. Hudson-Odoi chips the ball out to James arriving in the right side of the penalty area. Juventus are scrmabling to get back in shape so there’s loads of space for James to chest the ball down and blast a shot across goal and force Szczesny into a sharp one-handed save to his right!

Chelsea 1 - 0 Juventus

34 mins: Jorginho breaks up play in the middle of the pitch and passes the ball up to Pulisic. Chelsea sweep forward and Pulisic gives it to Kante in the inside right channel. He carries the ball into the box with options all around but seems caught between decisions and gets tackled.

Chelsea 1 - 0 Juventus

31 mins: So far so good for Chelsea. Kante nicks the ball high up the pitch and prods the ball to Pulisic who carries the ball into the box. He’s just got one defender to beat but attempts to feed Kante into the right side of the area and gives away possession with a poor pass.

Off the line! Silva rescues Chelsea

Chelsea 1 - 0 Juventus

28 mins: Locatelli collects the ball in midfield and waits for Morata’s run into the box before chipping it over to him. Edouard Mendy comes off his line to close down the ball but Morata dinks it over the goalkeeper only to be denied by a back-tracking Thiago Silva who slides towards his own goal and clears the ball off the line!

GOAL! Chelsea 1 - 0 Juventus (Chalobah, 25’)⚽️

25 mins: Chelsea have the lead! It’s Trevoh Chalobah who scores, on his first Champions League start for the Blues! Hakim Ziyech swings the corner into the box and Rabiot fails to deal with it. Rudiger jumps to win the header and the ball strikes his arm before dropping for Chalobah. He shots on the turn and right-foots the ball into the back of the net!

Chelsea 0 - 0 Juventus

24 mins: Save! Reece James takes the free kick and set himself for a cross before whacking a harp effort at goal. He tries to catch Szczesny out at the near post but the goalkeeper gets across and pushes the ball wide of the post.
