No team can deal with this many injuries - Ten Hag

Manchester United returned to winning ways in the Premier League as a pair of first-half penalties, both won by Alejandro Garnacho, helped Erik ten Hag’s side to a 2-0 victory over beleaguered Everton at Old Trafford.

Injury-hit United were sloppy throughout the contest but were gifted two spot-kicks through Everton mistakes. Garnacho was first kicked by Everton captain James Tarkowski in the box before the winger was tripped by Ben Godfrey. Bruno Fernandes put the first penalty past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford before United changed their taker for the second, with Marcus Rashford successfully converting against his England teammate.

Everton never looked like scoring as their winless run extended to 11 games in the Premier League, deepening the club’s relegation fears. United remain sixth but victory was needed to get their top-four push back on track, following defeats to Fulham and Manchester City.

Re-live the clash between Manchester United and Everton below.

Penalty to Manchester United!

34 min: Oh, there is no debate about this one. It’s Garnacho again, who wriggles into the box where Ben Godfrey dives in and trips him after the ball had been gone. Rashford will take this penalty...

Manchester United 1-0 Everton

32 min: A moment of controversy as Mykolenko dives towards the ball inside his own box, trying to head it clear, and ends up missing completely. It bounces up against his arms and Old Trafford roars for a penalty, but instead referee Simon Hooper gives Everton a free-kick for a push on the Everton defender by Fernandes. The Portuguese is typically displeased.

Manchester United 1-0 Everton

29 min: Manchester United’s best move of the game starts near their own corner flag. Fernandes and Jonny Evans work the ball out of that area and upfield, where Garnacho finds Rashford on the left wing, who plays a big switch to Fernandes arriving in the Everton box on the right side. Fernandes tries to slip in McTominay who fizzes a dangerous cross into the six-yard box, but McTominay is ruled offside. Flowing stuff but no reward.

Manchester United 1-0 Everton

28 min: A great save by Pickford! Fernandes’ effort curled over the wall and was heading towards the top corner when Pickford stretched out a glove to push it away from goal.

Manchester United 1-0 Everton

27 min: United have a free-kick about 20 yards or so from goal, in quite a central position, after a foul by Onana which earns the Everton midfielder a yellow card. Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford stand over it...

Manchester United 1-0 Everton

25 min: Another chance for Everton! This time Garner fires from the edge of the box, forcing a decent stop from Onana. It rebounds to Onana (Everton’s edition), who shoots off target. That was a bit rash, and Dyche throws his arms in the air in frustration.

Manchester United 1-0 Everton

22 min: Another sniff for Harrison, arriving at the far post to try and turn home a deep cross. Varane seemed to be unaware of a man behind him and was almost caught out, but Harrison couldn’t quite stretch enough to get his leg around the defender and get his toe on the ball.

Manchester United 1-0 Everton

18 min: Good football by Everton, this, who switch the ball out to the left wing for Mykolenko in open space. He looks inside and passes to Harrison drifting into a central area without a marker, who takes a touch before firing over from just outside the box.

Manchester United 1-0 Everton

16 min: Garnacho collects the ball on the right side of the box and tees up the arriving Bruno Fernandes alongside him, but the captain’s shot is high, high over the bar and he shakes his head.
