Manchester United vs Chelsea LIVE: Result and reaction as Emma Hayes’ side win WSL title after thrashing
Manchester City beat Aston Villa but the Blues finished top of the Women’s Super League on goal difference
Chelsea travelled to Manchester United in the WSL finale, needing a win and to stay ahead of Manchester City on goal difference - and achieved it in style, thrashing Manchester United 6-0 at Old Trafford in Emma Hayes’ final game in charge.
Mayra Ramirez was the star of the show, scoring twice in an all-action display, but the Blues were best from start to finish and wrapped up the win, a new WSL scoring record and the title itself with a late goal from another departing icon in Fran Kirby.
After a testing couple of months, with defeat to rivals Arsenal in the League Cup final and a crushing loss to Barcelona in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals, Chelsea have shown their resilience and came back to secure a famous title triumph. Follow all the reaction below:
GOAL! Aston Villa 0-1 Man City
In the other title match there has been an opening goal - Mary Fowler on the scoresheet for Man City! They’ll no doubt have heard about Chelsea’s early lead, but that will give them a boost that they can nonetheless stay in the hunt. Remember, they’re level on points so goal difference will count.
Fine left-footed finish from Fowler from the left side of the six-yard box.
19’ - Man United 0-2 Chelsea
Woodwork! A first real push into the Chelsea box and United earn a corner from it. Zelem swings it in and the flicked header is from Le Tissier - but the defender sees her effort bounce off the crossbar and over the bar!
15’ - Man United 0-2 Chelsea
The home team trying to get a foot on the ball and pass in areas where Chelsea cannot immediately turn them over - the tempo has been low from United and they haven’t managed to get any kind of numbers into the final third.
Understandable that they may struggle a little after the high of the FA Cup final perhaps, but still more required on the day.
11’ - Man United 0-2 Chelsea
Almost a third! Kaneryd gets in down the right again, behind the defence and cutting the ball unselfishly along the six-yard box - but this time Riviere just about gets back in time to make a last-ditch challenge and deny a simple tap-in.
Chelsea absolutely bossing United at the moment, the hosts need to really step it up physically as much as anything else.
GOAL! 8’ - Man United 0-2 Chelsea
Brilliant goal! Chelsea double their lead and it’s Ramirez with the assist this time, feeding Ryyting Kaneryd on the overlap and while the first touch is marginally heavy, she still beats Earps to the ball and dinks a glorious finish over the onrushing keeper’s dive and into the corner off the post. 2-0 to the visitors already!
4’ - Man United 0-1 Chelsea
Well, they simply couldn’t have had a better start, could they? First real attack, Ramirez absolutely bullied Turner there to fire that header in. Title very much in Chelsea’s hands as it stands...but a long, long way to go yet.
United trying to settle and pass the ball around to get themselves back into matters.
GOAL! 2’ - Man United 0-1 Chelsea
Wow, what a start!! A break down the left, an absolutely perfect cross from Reiten and Ramirez is racing in to rise hightest and bury a header past Earps from six yards out - amazing start for Chelsea!
1’ - Man United 0-0 Chelsea
Underway! Almost an error at the back between Riviere and Earps but they get away with it at the back.
