Scott McTominay fired an impressive Manchester United to victory over Chelsea as Erik ten Hag’s side bounced back into the Premier League’s top six.

McTominay scored both of the hosts goals in an entertaining 2-1 win as the hosts found their attacking flow.

After Bruno Fernandes had seen a spot-kick saved, the Scottish midfielder’s neatly-taken volley put the home side into a deserved lead 20 minutes in. Cole Palmer levelled just before half-time, though, as Chelsea rallied, causing regular problems for Ten Hag’s defence.

The Dutch manager responded with a switch at the interval, bringing on Sergio Reguilon and moving Luke Shaw to a central position to secure things at the back.

The move worked, affording McTominay the freedom to stride forward and powerfully direct home an inviting cross from Alejandro Garnacho home to put Manchester United back in front.

And though Armando Broja struck the woodwork with a header later on, Andre Onana was largely untroubled during the second half as the hosts moved ahead of Newcastle. Eddie Howe’s side will go back in front with a win or draw at Everton on Thursday night; Chelsea, meanwhile remain tenth.

Manchester United 2-1 Chelsea, 90 + 3 minutes

Good work from the hosts, keeping the ball in the corner to tick more seconds away. Sergio Reguilon’s attempts to time waste with the ball dead, though, are punished by the brandishing of a yellow card.

One of those has been played as a frustrated Cole Palmer petulantly fouls Bruno Fernandes. Manchester United take more time out of the game by bringing on Jonny Evans to fortify their defence; Alejandro Garnacho is replaced.

Off the angle of the goal! Armando Broja can’t quite force it home! Another delectable ball from Reece James, ever more influential, and Chelsea’s replacement striker heads against the woodwork.

Four additional minutes to be played.

A diagonal from Enzo Fernandez is headed out to Reece James, who lets fly from a reasonably tight angle. Sliced over the bar with Andre Onana untroubled.

Still 1-0 to Aston Villa against Manchester City with time running even shorter there than here. That really would be some result for Unai Emery’s impressive side.

Chelsea begin to vary their passing, playing a couple long as they seek an equaliser.

A missed flick with goal begging! A beautiful ball from Reece James, legally advancing to a crossing position for the first time and picking out an onrushing Enzo Fernandez. The ball is slightly behind the World Cup winner, so he attempts to confect a spinning back-heel, which fails to connect.

Here is that Manchester United change, with Marcus Rashford on up top for Rasmus Hojlund - curiously a bit-part figure in a game in which the hosts have recorded nearly 30 shots. Still, some tidy work in possession from the striker, who has created space for others.

Strange - Reece James taps it forward to try and give Enzo Fernandez a rifling opportunity, but the touch is heavy and two Manchester United players are in close attention as Fernandez eventually strikes. Into them and away it ricochets.

Nicolas Jackson flicks cleverly around the corner to Raheem Sterling, who is hauled back by Diogo Dalot. A fourth yellow card of the evening for Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford will soon be with us, but not before his side have defended this free kick. 30 yards out, maybe - left of centre. Hittable.

So nearly three! Another careless header from Reece James grants Manchester United possession in advanced territory. Tidy play down the left and an inward pass is directed for goal by Alejandro Garnacho, but the angle and curl of his left-footed shot takes it away from goal with Robert Sanchez beaten.
