Rangnick: Manchester United must work harder to score goals

Follow live reaction from the Premier League as Manchester United returned to winning ways and Cristiano Ronaldo ended his scoring drought against 10-man Brighton.

Jadon Sancho had the first chance of the match after being slipped in by Ronaldo’s back-heel, only to be denied by Robert Sanchez’s outstretched arm.

It was Brighton who had the better of the opening half, however, with David de Gea producing a stunning stop to deny Jakub Moder’s header for the impressive visitors.

But the match turned shortly after the restart and in the space of 90 seconds, as Ronaldo fired a brilliant finish past Sanchez to open the scoring and Lewis Dunk was sent off for bringing down Anthony Elanga.

Bruno Fernandes added a second to seal the win in stoppage time. The result moves Ralf Rangnick’s side ahead of West Ham and back into the Premier League’s top four, while ending a run of three matches without a win in all competitions.

Manchester United vs Brighton: If Cristiano Ronaldo is not scoring, what else does he offer to Manchester United?

This is Cristiano Ronaldo’s longest barren spell in front of goal in 13 years. That it currently stands at just six games demonstrates what a truly extraordinary player he has been over that period – a goalscorer almost beyond comparison in the modern game – but there were times at Old Trafford on Saturday that when you wondered if this is more than a dry patch.

“Of course he would have wished to score, I would have wished him to score,” Ralf Rangnick, the United manager, said after yet another Ronaldo blank and yet another occasion when Manchester United had thrown away a lead. “Today he had his chances, one of the biggest was when he went past the goalkeeper but it was cleared off the line.”

Rangnick was referring to Ronaldo’s best and only genuine sight of goal in the 1-1 draw with Southampton. A screencap ripped from the live match footage was shared on social media at full time. It shows Ronaldo with the ball at his feet. Fraser Forster and two backpedalling defenders are behind him. Ahead of him is an open goal, just out of the frame.

If Cristiano Ronaldo is not scoring goals, what else does he offer?

Manchester United vs Brighton: Rangnick talks mentality

Manchester United manager, Ralf Rangnick, believes his players are taking on his ideas but need to improve their mentality in games to ensure they are on the winning side.

United have dropped four points from their last two Premier League games after taking the lead against both Burnley and Southampton and Rangnick wants them to raise their levels in these types of situations. He said:

The situation is pretty clear, in 11 of 13 games we score the first goal, 1-0 up and we didn’t win all of them. In the last three games, it was very sad we didn’t win those games, it cost us four points in the league and next round in the FA Cup.

“I think it’s pretty obvious the players are getting ideas across... the players understand why we are doing a good job and now it’s about doing that sustainably for the entire game and this is exactly the next step we have to take.

"The first halves have been really good, we didn’t concede a single goal, the next step is to raise our level and stay focused, physically, mentally, tactically. We gave away those goals away too easily; it was just too easy and it was our own mistake we made to let the other team score."
