Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League as Atletico Madrid triumphed 1-0 at Old Trafford to record a 2-1 aggregate win and advance to the quarter-finals.

Old Trafford demanded a classic European night, but only got a vintage Atletico performance, to produce another dismally routine Champions League exit for the Red Devils.

Their season is good as over after this 1-0 defeat, courtesy of Renan Lodi’s first-half header, bar a needlessly panicked chase for a place in the competition next season.

If they manage that, it will need immense changes for that to be anything other than yet another forgettable exit. This is a shadow of the club it should be, as a night like this proved. There was no grand-stand comeback, no great display from Cristiano Ronaldo. He was a ghost, but one of many. His psychological hold over Atletico is broken, to go with so much in the United team.

Atletico, for all the intensity of their celebration, didn’t really require the same intensity to their display. They had too much nous for United, too much Champions League experience.

Manchester United vs Atletico Madrid: Five things we learned as Red Devils knocked out of Champions League

Manchester United are out of Europe after a 1-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last-16 second leg on Tuesday night.

Anthony Elanga twice went close in the opening stages and David de Gea had to claw a long-range Rodrigo de Paul effort around the post in an exciting opening spell, before Joao Felix had a finish ruled out for offside.

Before the break Atletico found another route to goal though and this time it did count - Renan Lodi appearing at the far post to head home and pile the pressure on Ralf Rangnick’s half-time team talk.

United made several second-half changes but rarely got close to finding a breakthrough beyond a header which was superbly saved by Jan Oblak, as Atletico eased into the quarter-finals.

Here are five things we learned from the second leg:

That is even more of an indictment for United given Diego Simeone’s side are a long way from the force they used to be in this competition.

Atletico have gone over to celebrate with their away fans who are in great voice. It’s another big result away from home for Diego Simeone’s men.

They controlled the match brilliantly, they sat in, defended well and now they’re in the Champions League quarter-finals.
