From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Hard-charging Manchester City went four points clear of Arsenal at the top the Premier League on Saturday, beating Leeds United 2-1 with a pair of near-identical goals from Ilkay Gundogan, stretching their winning league run to 10 games.

City’s prolific striker Erling Haaland graciously handed the ball to Gundogan to take a penalty kick in the 84th minute for what would have been a hat trick, but Leeds keeper Joel Robles had no trouble turning aside his shot.

City had run circles around Leeds with numerous excellent scoring chances before Gundogan struck in the 19th minute from the edge of the 18-yard box off a pass from Riyad Mahrez. Mahrez teed up Gundogan again eight minutes later in a carbon copy of his first goal.

Rodrigo Moreno pulled one back for Leeds in the 85th minute.

With four games left, Pep Guardiola’s side have 82 points to Arsenal’s 78, and if the Gunners lose to Newcastle on Sunday City will have all but locked up an illustrious third consecutive title. Leeds, playing their first game under interim manager Sam Allardyce who was parachuted in in a last-ditch effort to avoid relegation, are teetering in 17th place - and all three teams below them have a game in hand.

Relive the action as Manchester City defeated Leeds, which is followed by Liverpool vs Brentford:

Around the grounds

Elsewhere in the other 3 pm kick-offs, Harry Kane became the first player to score 10 headers in a Premier League season. His goal has Tottenham 1-0 up against Crystal Palace.

Chelsea took the lead against Bournemouth with Conor Gallagher’s ninth-minute strike but Matias Vina’s goal means it’s 1-1 at the break on the south coast.

And in the West Midlands, Toti’s early header means Wolves have a 1-0 lead over Aston Villa at the break as they look to reach 40 points and secure Premier League safety.

Liverpool vs Brentford

In this evening’s game Liverpool will look to continue a fine recent run of Premier League form as they welcome Brentford to Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have won five games in a row and now sit only four points back from Manchester United in fourth, though they have played a game more than their rivals.

Brentford’s own hopes of European qualification had been beginning to fade after a tough April, but two wins in four days have kept Thomas Frank’s team in the mix.

But a win on Merseyside might be a must if the London club are to challenge Aston Villa, Tottenham and Brighton ahead of them for a Europa League place.

HALF-TIME: Man City 2-0 Leeds

The players head down the tunnel and it’s another flawless 45 minutes from Man City who lead 2-0 at the break against Leeds United.

A brace from Gundogan - both well-hit strikes from the edge of the box - is the difference between the two sides but it’s been comfortable for the home side who have looked several cuts above this Leeds side. 11 shots, 84% possession and surely on their way to another three points.

Welcome back to the Premier League, Big Sam...

Man City 2-0 Leeds

45+2 mins: Yellow card. Gnonto slips as he looks to close down Mahrez on the right and it’s a clumsy challenge. No hint of intent and he apologises immediately but it’s a yellow card for the Italian.

From the free-kick, Foden tries his luck with a spectacular volley from the edge of the box. He catches it beautifully but it flies just over the bar and that’s the half.

Man City 2-0 Leeds

44 mins: A couple of minutes left in this half but City have another corner after Foden’s cross is turned behind by Kristensen. Mahrez’s delivery is poor and Firpo heads it clear.

Man City 2-0 Leeds

39 mins: Pretty comfortable stuff for City so far in this first half - just the 84% possession as we approach the 40th minute.

If Allardyce didn’t appreciate the scale of the task he’ll have to pull off to steer this Leeds side to safety, he surely does now...
