Pep Guardiola left speechless following Erling Haaland’s brace against Brighton

Riyad Mahrez missed a penalty but Manchester City booked their place in the Champions League knockout stages as group winners as they earned a 0-0 draw at Borussia Dortmund, who also secured their place in the last 16 with a match to spare.

Mahrez’s penalty in the second half was City’s best chance in a match that saw Pep Guardiola’s side create few chances, with Erling Haaland brought off at half-time on his return to his former side. But Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel made the save down to his right as Dortmund held on to claim the result they needed in order to finish as runners-up in Group G.

The German side had the better of the opening half and had the best chance of the opening period, which was put wide by Youssoufa Moukoko. The draw suited both sides, however, after Sevilla beat Copenhagen 3-0 earlier in the day.

Manchester City secured top spot in Group E following a largely uneventful 0-0 draw with Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park.

City went closest to breaking the deadlock when Riyad Mahrez’s second-half penalty was saved and they remain unbeaten and are assured of top spot in Group E with one game to play.

The point was also enough for Dortmund, who were intent on keeping a clean sheet after having the better of the first half, and they too are guaranteed a place in the last 16.

Erling Haaland had scant chance to make an impact against his former club and was replaced at the interval.

Here’s some reaction from Guardiola, speaking to BT Sport:

“We played much better in the second half. In the first we conceded lots of balls that led to counter-attacks. We suffered becasue our game on Saturday was demanding physically. We achieved what we wanted. Top of the group. Really good.”

On the half-time changes...

“Erling feels better. He had a little bit of a fever but travelled well. Joao had a knocked on his foot. That was why we changed. In that period we struggled a lot.”

On Mahrez’s penalty miss and whether he will take another one...

“We will see. Of course it is a problem. We miss too much (25 under Guardiola). I always admire the courage but we miss a lot of penalties. It is a problem and we have to improve. It can be the difference in the Champions League, with fine margins.”

The referee blows up slightly early, which sums up the last 20 minutes of this match. Both teams knew that a draw suited them so played out a goalless draw. However, it means City win the group and Dortmund go through too. Everyone is happy.

88 mins: Meanwhile Mahrez’s night is over. He is brought off for Cole Palmer following his penalty miss, which was City’s best chance of getting the win.

It won’t matter too much, though, as this heads towards its inevitable conclusion.

Borussia Dortmund 0-0 Manchester City

78 mins: We’re not heading for a grandstand ending, but both teams will be happy with this result as things stand. A draw will mean City are group winners while securing Dortmund their place in the knockout stages. Sevilla win over Copenhagen earlier means Dortmund can’t be caught, as they have the head-to-head advantage over the Spanish side.
