Harry Maguire headed a second-half goal and goalkeeper Andre Onana saved a penalty deep in stoppage time to power Manchester United to a 1-0 victory over FC Copenhagen for their first victory in the Champions League this season.
Back in the competition after a one-year absence, Erik ten Hag’s side moved into third place in Group A after collecting a precious three points after three games. Bayern Munich top the group with nine points after beating Galatasary 3-1 earlier.
The victory looked in doubt when Copenhagen’s Jordan Larsson stepped up to the spot after Scott McTominay attempted a clearance and caught Elias Achouri in the head with a high boot in the 94th minute. But Onana dived to his left to push the shot away before being mobbed by team mates at the final whistle.
Maguire, who has been the target of fan abuse in recent months, had the Old Trafford faithful on their feet when he broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, Christian Eriksen’s long ball into the area finding the defender at the far post.
A night that began on a solemn note with a tribute to club great Bobby Charlton, who died on Saturday at age 86, ended in celebration with fans singing “There’s only one Bobby Charlton”.

A cross comes over to Diogo Goncalves who opens up his body and guides a low effort towards the far corner. Andre Onana is beaten but United are saved by the post as the ball ricochets to safety!

Andre Onana decides not to take a chance that the effort will go wide and palms it behind, at full stretch, for a corner. United defend the set piece well enough and earn themselves a free kick in the process.

It’s good news for Man Utd who need to win tonight to keep in touch with both Copenhagen and Galatasary. Their best chance of qualifying for the knockouts will probably come for finishing second behind Bayern.

“This is an iconic and historic stadium, but if we do our job right on the pitch, there will be periods of time where you can hear our near-3,000 fans more than the home fans.”

Erik ten Hag urged Manchester United to win and to do so in style as a fitting tribute to the late Sir Bobby Charlton when they host FC Copenhagen.
Charlton captained Manchester United to victory in the 1968 European Cup and Ten Hag feels his team, who have lost their first two Champions League games of the current campaign, have to beat the Danish side on Tuesday evening.
It will be United’s first match at Old Trafford since Charlton died at the age of 86 and Ten Hag expects it to be an emotional affair.
