Everton boss Lampard: "I don't need re-assurances over my job"

Marcus Rashford was on target again as Manchester United earned a nervy 3-1 victory over Everton in the FA Cup third round on Friday.

United named a strong starting XI and raced into an early lead after Brazilian forward Antony slid the ball home at the far post four minutes in.

Winless in their last seven games in all competitions prior to their trip to Old Trafford, Everton fans would have been fearing the worst, but 10 minutes later, Connor Coady capitalised on an error from United goalkeeper David de Gea to level.

United had several chances to retake the lead before Coady found the net at the wrong end of the pitch, turning Rashford’s cross past Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford shortly after halftime to put the hosts 2-1 in front.

Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin thought he had earned Everton a dramatic late draw and a replay with a near-post equaliser, only for VAR to rule the goal out for offside.

To compound Everton’s woes, Rashford fired home a stoppage time penalty to score for the fifth successive match and put the seal on a seventh win in a row in all competitions for United.

Five games, five goals. Marcus Rashford has returned from the World Cup in rare form and if the man whose name was imprinted twice on this scoresheet was Conor Coady, who struck at either end, Everton were eliminated from the FA Cup by Rashford. He played a huge part in all three Manchester United’s goals and, composed as his 97th-minute penalty was as he extended his record of finding the net in every game since he came back from Qatar, his crossing proved more significant than his shooting. Two inviting low crosses that only required a touch: first Antony and then the luckless Coady obliged and United became the first side to enter the fourth-round draw.

In the process, they ensured Everton’s wait for major silverware, which dates back to their 1995 final win over United, will extend at least until 2024. Whether Frank Lampard is in charge to oversee their next FA Cup campaign, or indeed next week’s relegation six-pointer with Southampton, remains to be seen but this was the kind of spirited display to suggest he retains his players’ backing.

Frank Lampard, speaking to ITV, on whether Everton deserved more tonight: “I think so. The players were very good in terms of organising and work ethic, which are basics of football but we are under pressure and it has been questioned. We had good chances and a goal disallowed. Marcus Rashford was the difference between the teams and that’s what individual quality can do.

“Tonight I saw a performance that every manager wants and our attention now turns to Southampton. I’m not concerned [about my future]. I know how quickly things can change in the Premier League. Our game next week is at Goodison. We have to make our fans feel like they did tonight and get the win.”

Marcus Rashford, who was player of the match, speaking to ITV: “It’s always nice to go through in cup games and more importantly we keep the momentum going. They were under pressure but I thought they did well. They didn’t panic and got back in the game. They’re still fighting and they’re still together. In goalscoring form this is up there with as good as its been. I’m feeling good on the pitch and I feel if I keep getting changes I’ll keep scoring them. We want to win silverware and hopefully this season we get the chance to do that. “

Manchester United are through the fourth round of the FA Cup and now have seven wins in a row under Erik ten Hag.

That was an pretty good FA Cup tie. Everton made a game of it despite falling behind early, and put United under some pressure near the end.

Conor Coady’s second-half own goal, forced by a Marcus Rashford cross, was the decisive moment as United retook the lead.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin had an equaliser disallowed due to offside before Rashford wrapped up the win from the penalty spot late on.

On the whole, Everton can hold their heads high and Lampard’s players are still working for their manager on this evidence.

And that’s the game! Rashford takes his time to send Pickford the wrong way. Excellent penalty, and it keeps Rashford’s scoring streak going.

PENALTY! Manchester United 2-1 Everton

It’s a penalty for United as Godfrey clips Garnacho in the box! There was lots of space for United to attack and Garnacho was sent through on goal. He cut across Godfrey and went down under the challenge. It’s a bit soft but Rashford will have the chance to wrap this up.
