The first half may have seen Man City 2-1 up, thanks to a brace from Kevin De Bruyne and a goal from Jadon Sancho, but it was a fairly even contest with Cristiano Ronaldo's absence throwing a spanner in the works for the hosts.

But the second half was a completely different story with City dominating their rivals. City had 92% of possession in a 15 minute period and the introductions of Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford had little to no impact for Ralf Rangnick's team.

Riyad Mahrez was the star of the second 45, scoring two. The first was a screamer as he converted from a corner to put the visitors out of sight and he got his second in the dying moments of the match after a VAR check.

The match started with a promising performance from United but it turned out to be a shocking and at some points embarrassing for the visitors. The loss means they are outside of the top four after Arsenal defeated Watford earlier today and City have put their six-point cushion at the top of the table back in place.

Liverpool will fancy their chances of knocking them off the top but if City continue with this form they'll be the ones lifting the trophy this season.

Man City vs Man Utd: Line-ups and changes

Man City make three changes for the derby. Kyle Walker comes in to the defence in place of Ruben Dias meaning John Stones will switch into the middle from right-back. Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez come into the attack, with Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan dropping to the bench.

For Man Utd, Harry Maguire returns to partner Victor Lindelof in the absence of Raphael Varane who misses out with Covid. Jadon Sancho comes in to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, which could mean Bruno Fernandes or Anthony Elanga as a false nine.

Scott McTominay also returns to midfield in place of Nemanja Matic.

Here’s a reminder of the two line-ups:

Man City: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Laporte, Joao Cancelo, De Bruyne, Rodri, Grealish, Mahrez, Bernardo Silva, Foden.

Man Utd: de Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Alex Telles, McTominay, Fred, Sancho, Bruno Fernandes, Pogba, Elanga.

Watford 2 - 3 Arsenal

Watford threatened a comeback right at the end of the game but Arsenal had enough game management to close out their win. That’s four wins in a row now for Mikel Arteta’s men who move ahead of Manchester United to take fourth place... for now.

Next up is the Manchester derby. Can United beat City and recover their place in the top four?
