The Champions League returned on Tuesday night and Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, eventually broke down Atletico Madrid at the Etihad Stadium to take a 1-0 lead in the Champions League quarter-final first leg.

After being frustrated by the visitors for large swathes of the game, City finally made the breakthrough on 70 minutes as Phil Foden slipped in Kevin De Bruyne who finished expertly beyond Jan Oblak and gave them a lead to take into next week’s second leg at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Both Guardiola and opposite number Diego Simeone have faced heartache in the final of this competition with their current clubs, but City remain the favourites to go the distance this time - even if this is proving to be a huge test for the Cityzens in the last eight.

The winners of this tie will progress to face either Chelsea or Real Madrid in the semi-finals of the Champions League, following last month’s draw.

Owen Hargreaves speaking sense on BT Sport.

“That was a really hard game,” he said. “In the past they could have lost that game but Atletico did not have a shot on target.

“The subs changed the game and City were by far the better team. They kept their composure and I think the will go there and win by more.

“Can you find a way to win not at your best? The great players decide the big games, Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden.”

Match winner Kevin de Bruyne has given his thoughts on the game.

He told BT Sport: “The first half was tight in the second half we had a couple of chances and it was good that we took one.

“I made the run and Phil [Foden] found me perfectly, I needed to stay composed and luckily I did. It’s very hard. They played with almost five at the back and with five in midfield. I recommend anyone that says anything [about us], that they try playing against that on the training ground.

“We have to stay composed and don’t try to get into their action. It is the way they play. One nil is one nil. I expect similar over there. If the game is tight they will have to attack a little bit more.

Full-time: That’s it. Manchester City earn themselves a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the second leg in Spain. Kevin de Bruyne found the breakthrough in the 70th minute after a superb piece of play from substitute Phil Foden.

Will both teams be happy with that? Atletico will need to show a hell of a lot more going forward if they are to reach the semi-finals.

Job done for Man City.
