Liverpool’s bid for an unprecedented quadruple of major trophies ended in agonizing fashion on Sunday despite coming from behind to beat Wolves 3-1 on the final day of the Premier League

Jurgen Klopp’s team also needed Manchester City to drop points against Aston Villa — managed by Liverpool great Steven Gerrard — and the leaders recovered from two goals down to win 3-2 in a dramatic finale at Etihad .

Liverpool finished a point behind City — just like in the 2018-19 season — and missed out on a record-tying 20th English league championship.

It is still an extraordinary season for Liverpool, who won both the FA Cup and League Cup and will play in the Champions League final against Real Madrid next weekend.

Pedro Neto gave Wolves the lead in the third minute after Ibrahima Konate misjudged a long ball forward, allowing Raul Jimenez to run through and cross for Neto to tap in.

Sadio Mane equalized in the 24th, and Liverpool wound up fulfilling its part of the final-day bargain by scoring through Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson in the final six minutes.

Follow all the action from Liverpool vs Wolves below:

Liverpool beat Wolves but fall short in race for Premier League title

When Mohamed Salah was summoned from the bench, the task was twofold. Win the game and the league for Liverpool. He managed one but not the other, a Manchester City comeback taking Liverpool’s destiny out of their own hands.

The bid for quadruple finally ended, perhaps in suitable style: with Liverpool winning. They have triumphed in 16 of their last 18 league games, but it was not enough. It amounted to a second case of doomed heroics in four league seasons, chasing City to the last again, finishing with more than 90 points, but coming second.

On a strange afternoon at Anfield, the loudest ovation was reserved for part of Liverpool’s past. When Philippe Coutinho put Aston Villa 2-0 up at the Etihad, all Liverpool needed was a goal. They procured two in the end, but Andy Robertson’s strike met with less noise than Coutinho’s. Even Jurgen Klopp looked subdued, aware that nine months of work could end with Liverpool as champions of Europe, but not England.

Manchester City win Premier League title after late comeback win over Aston Villa

With echoes of 2012, and both raucousness and relief, Manchester City celebrate an eighth English title.

A day that for so long looked like it would bring the most anguished frustration so suddenly became a scene of celebration. It didn’t go as late as that day against Queens Park Rangers, but it did have the same 3-2 final score, from even more a flurry.

On 69 minutes, Philippe Coutinho scored to make it 2-0 to Aston Villa, as Pep Guardiola looked to Ilkay Gundogan rather than Jack Grealish to come on. On 76 minutes, the German had hit his first. By 81 minutes, he’d hit a second and City’s third, to swing the title back to Manchester again.

The fans are being encouraged to leave the pitch at the Etihad Stadium so that Manchester City can be awarded the Premier League trophy.

A lot of them are reluctant to leave yet slowly but surely they’re returning to the stands.

Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah share top scorer award

Son Heung-min and Mohamed Salah have been jointly crowned winners of the Premier League Golden Boot for the 2021/22 season.

The Tottenham forward went into the last day of the campaign in second place behind the Liverpool man, but two goals for the South Korean in a 5-0 win over Norwich City saw a late turnaround for the individual award.

With the Egyptian left on the bench for the Reds, the opportunity was there for Son and his side to go goal-crazy against the league’s bottom, and already relegated, team.

Liverpool close out their game at Anfield. They’ve beaten Wolves but miss out on the title by a point. Their chances at a quadruple are also over.

Manchester City win Premier League title after late comeback win over Aston Villa

Manchester City have been crowned Premier League champions after a final-day victory over Aston Villa.

Pep Guardiola’s side went into the final day of the season one point ahead of Liverpool and maintained that gap courtesy of a 3-2 win, ensuring they retain the title they won last year.

But it was far from routine as Villa went two goals up, before an incredible six-minute turnaround saw Ilkay Gundogan and Rodrigo net quickfire strikes, with Gundogan netting his second to spark wild scenes.

Man City 3 - 2 Aston Villa

90+2 mins: Ederson has been down for around a minute with an injury to his left leg. Man City have used all their substitutions and he’ll have to carry on. This stoppage should mean that the game at Anfield finished ahead of this one.
